Artificial Intelligence
Have you ever heard about Artificial Intelligence (AI) in your life? Some people
might know a lot about AI, but some might just hear about it for the first time. Artificial
Intelligence is also called “machine intelligence” which is the area of science that
focuses on creating machines that have the ability to behave more intelligent than
human beings. For example, people nowadays use AI as autonomous weapons,
autonomous industry, decision-making and so on. Artificial intelligence has become a
big controversy between scientists within the past few years. All scientists are arguing
that will artificial intelligence improve human’s communities in ways we humans can’t, or
will they just cause danger to human? The scope of AI is disputed as a thing which
hasn't been done yet. Actually, during over 50 years of research and introduction in
techniques of artificial intelligence programming have led people to believe that the
dream of such smart capabilities will soon become a reality. The main issue of artificial
intelligence is the challenges that have not yet been met and scientists are not yet
aware how to resolve the issue in terms of manufacturing intelligence.
From now, AI is strongly influencing people's life and be more powerful. In recent
years, business and technology companies are looking for another great technological
leap forward. According to The New York Times, it shows “Self-driving cars, factory
robots and a new class of farm hands known as ag-robots are already demonstrating
what increasingly mobile machines can do. Indeed, the rapid advance of computer
vision is just one of a set of artificial intelligence-oriented technologies — others include
speech recognition, dexterous manipulation and navigation — that underscore a sea
change beyond personal computing and the Internet, the technologies that have defined
the last three decades of the computing world. ‘During the next decade we’re going to
see smarts put into everything,’ said Ed Lazowska, a computer scientist at the
University of Washington who is a specialist in Big Data. ‘Smart homes, smart cars,
smart health, smart robots, smart science, smart crowds and smart computer-human
interactions. Apple was the most successful early innovator in popularizing what is
today described as ubiquitous computing. The idea, first proposed by Mark Weiser, a
computer scientist with Xerox, involves embedding powerful microprocessor chips in
everyday objects.”(John, 2013) Through continuous efforts and updates on AI by
scientists, it also constantly solve basic a problem efficiently and bring benefits to our
life.
People might have questions on AI: why is it suddenly so hot or why is it
everywhere? According to CNBC, it said “In 2012, Google made headlines when it
trained a neural network with 16,000 central processing unit (CPU) chips on 10 million
images from YouTube videos and taught it to recognize cats. But later that year, the
world of image recognition was rocked when an eight-layer neural network trained on
two graphics processing units (GPUs) outdid all others in a competition to accurately
classify images based on their content. Months later, Google acquired DNNresearch,
the University of Toronto team behind the breakthrough. Since then, AI activity has only
accelerated, with the world's top technology companies leading the way.”(Jordan, 2017)
Meanwhile, many and many technology companies continue to research and create
more successful AI on their work which can cause benefit to people’ life.
There are many examples show that AI has strongly connected with people's
lives and make our life to be efficiently working. According to CNBC, it shows that
“Amazon has long used A.I. to recommend products in its e-commerce business, and it
employs robots to move products around fulfillment centers. But in the past few years
the company has brought in some revenue by selling Amazon Echo speakers through
which people can talk to Amazon's Alexa virtual assistant. While Alexa's speech
recognition isn't perfect, it does quickly respond to user input, and it plugs into an
increasing number of third-party services and devices. Building on the public's
fascination with Alexa, Amazon last year introduced AI services for recognizing objects
in images and understanding voice and text input. Amazon has also opened a
convenience store that uses A.I. to identify the products that customers grab off the
shelves.”(Jordan, 2017) And also like Apple, Facebook, Microsoft and Google
companies have using AI technology add on their product, so that it makes their product
to be more powerful.
In other hands, AI is not only can use on the electronic product, but also on the
car. According to The New York Times, it said “recently General Motors and Nissan
have said they will introduce completely autonomous cars by the end of the decade. In
a blend of artificial-intelligence software and robotics, Mobileye, a small Israeli
manufacturer of camera technology for automotive safety that was founded by Mr.
Shashua, has made considerable progress. While Google and automotive
manufacturers have used a variety of sensors including radars, cameras and lasers,
fusing the data to provide a detailed map of the rapidly changing world surround a
moving car, Mobileye researchers are attempting to match that accuracy with just video
cameras and specialized software.”(John, 2013)
With the development of the times, the field of AI show people that they can
solve basic problems efficiently; help people to build on observations; tie people
application to an end goal and it also has the high percentage of making the right
decisions.
Most people nowadays use technology in many places and on most of the things
as possible. Technology makes people’s life easier and faster to find the solutions or
make more improvements. There are many different areas in the society uses Artificial
Intelligence (AI) to improve their progress of results and the speed of their work. AI is a
machines that learns what was coded or trained by the specialist into the program which
is saved in their system and they will almost perfectly solve the problem.
The one case that our group was focusing on was about healthcare sector which
help post- operative patient care process. We understand that health is really important
to living human being and most hospitals are trying their best to help the society.
However, there are limited doctors and nurse in many of the hospitals and there are
tons and tons of people coming in everyday to the hospital for help. If there are AI
helpers to help, it will make the people who work in the hospital life so much easier.
There are many people that goes to the hospital and have their operations done
in there. The case that we are looking and aiming was where should the patient go after
the operation. Do the patient need to stay in the hospital and move to the general care
hospital floor (GC) or need to be transferred to intensive care (IC) or the patient may go
home right after the operation. These jobs are usually done by the doctors and nurses
before having AIs around. However, it does take a lot of time for the doctors to go
around the patients one by one and examine them and it does take a lot of energy too.
Just imagine there are 15 patients and one doctor on duty, it does take a lot of time and
doctors are humans too.
In order to make things run fast and at the same time very reliable. AI will be the
best helper for the hospitals. All they need to have and collect are all the necessary
datas from the patients which decides whether the patient should stay or not and the
nurses will coded or trained to an AI. And after the AI is well trained, they will easily tell
what is the next step to the patient.
This will be so much faster and accurate for the doctors and nurse to make the
decision. And it is actually more reliable than humans because AI follows the data and
makes the decisions and they will never get tired or interrupted by external factors.
Doctors and specialist however can focus on other important things that need to be
done. And of course patient will be more satisfied about the results and how fast the
process was.
There is another case study that was part of the healthcare sector is about
Breast Cancer Diagnosis Process. This one will be more complicated than the previous
case. This one diagnosis whether the patient have breast cancer or not. The patient
does go through many different progress with different digitized images and use the
computer to analysis it. In order to study, they collected all the datas and train to the AIs
and then AI when learned how to recognize the characteristics of the having the breast
cancer or not.
People use the AI because it does take less time and faster to cure the patient
and it has better reliable results. AIs will do the confusing measurements to use as the
decisions. It is very convenient because it updates the datas and patient’s information
automatically.
As we talked about the two case studies
