Networking
Discussion Topic
You will want to use your textbook and other outside resources for this discussion.
In your original post, answer the following:
· How does a multiport repeater/hub function on a network? What are some of the roles of a multiport repeater/hub? What are some drawbacks of using these devices?
· How does a network switch function on a network? What are some of the roles of a network switch? What are some advantages of using a network switch on a network instead of a multiport repeater/hub?
· How does a network router function on a network? What are some of the roles of a network router? How are network switches and routers different?
In the second and third parts of this discussion, you will be using Packet Tracer.
Drag the following switches onto your Packet Tracer desktop: 2960, 3560-24PS, and a 3650-24PS. Double-click on each switch to see the physical layout of items such as the switch ports, power supplies, console ports, and other modules and parts. Click on the Config tab at the top to display the naming convention for the switch ports.
Next, go to the Web and conduct some research on each of these switches. Share with the class some interesting information you find on each switch.
Drag the following routers onto your Packet Tracer desktop: 1841, 1941, and 4321. Double-click on each router to see the physical layout of items such as different modules, ports, and power supplies. Click on the Config tab at the top to display the naming convention for the router ports.
Next, go to the Web and research each of these routers. Share with the class some interesting information you find on each router.
Now that you have three switches and three routers on your Packet Tracer desktop, you will be connecting them together using the Physical layout view. At the top left corner, click on Physical, then Home City --> Corporate Office --> Main Wiring Closet. You will then see a network rack with your equipment.
Now rearrange the rack so the switches and routers are staggered- switch then router, switch then router, and switch then router.
Now you will connect each switch to the router below it using a copper straight-through cable. Tip- click on the Zoom-in magnifying glass while making your connections.
Once you connect each switch to the router beneath it, write down which ports you used on each end of the connection. What other cables can you use to make these connections?
