1. As the team leader, you have weighed the pros and cons of the five options and prepared a presentation to management on how to address this problem. What do you suggest?

As the team leader I would break down each option available with the possible results of each. I would then suggest the most effective way to help John in becoming productive again as he was in the beginning. I would also consider the affects that the colleagues may endure as well depending on what decision about John will be made. The company as a whole should think accordingly on the decisions that will be made.

2. Consider each of the options, and develop an argument to defend your position for each option.

Option 1: Do nothing.

Explain how important John is to the company which will influence John to return to contributing more as he has done so in the past. By choosing any other option will cause an increase of negativity.

Option 2: Bypass company policy and promote John.

By promoting John because of his expertise and experience within this team holds more weight than an educated member and John will help improve the efficiency of the team.

Option 3: Talk John into going back to college.

Inform John that the company’s promotion criteria have changed and requires employees to be a graduated student. By doing so, John will receive a promotion after graduating from continuing his education.

Option 4: Relocate John to a different project team.

The problem with John has been confirmed as his productivity and attitude, the relocation of him to another team could impact the efforts of that team and without the support of his current team may lead to the termination of John.

Option 5: Terminate John’s employment.

By terminating John will create negativity in the entire team as these individuals have a tight bond. The production and efficiency of this team will be affected.

3. What specific leadership behaviors mentioned in this chapter are most relevant to addressing and resolving the problems with John?

The specific leadership behaviors that are most relevant to addressing and resolving the problems

with John are empathy, social skills, and motivation. Empathy is one of the most important traits

of a successful leader. Empathy according to Pinto, J., “means the willingness to consider other

team members’ feelings in the process of making an informed decision.” (pg. 124) Social skill is

an leadership trait in which gives the team leader in the case the ability to move people or person

in a direction the team leader desires and the manner of persuasiveness, rapport, and building

networks. Finally, motivation which the team leader uses to motivate all team members of a

project to achieve maximum potential of themselves and team members. By the use of these

three traits discussed in this chapter will effectively help John in overcoming his problems.
