Formally Analyze an Artwork

Look closely at the painting and begin to decipher the overall mood

Begin making a list of all the formal elements present in the work

Now, narrow down the elements to the 3-5 most important

Pull together an overall thesis statement

Go through each element and not only describe how it is used, but also explain the VISUAL EFFECT it has on the work and connect it back to your thesis

When discussing your chosen elements, they should ALL relate back to your thesis statement. This will help organize your thoughts and also keep you on track. Try to avoid going off on tangents that do not support your thesis!

Further, do not try to use “big” words in your writing if you do not understand their meaning and therefore, misuse the vocabulary. I cannot tell you the number of times that random “big” words are placed into these papers that clearly have no understanding of their meaning or proper use. Do not do this. It does not make you sound smart or make your paper any better. I always encourage expanding our vocabulary and better articulation, but to do this be sure you look up the word and are using it correctly. I expect college level writing in this paper. 2. You have included an image of your chosen work

3. Your paper was written in third person

4. You have proof-read your paper. Spelling and grammar errors will be marked down
