The Atmosphere
1. Oxygen and Ozone are molecules containing the same element in two different forms. Answer the following question about oxygen and ozone: (3 pts each; 9 points total)
a. Write the formulas for an oxygen molecule and an ozone molecule. What is the main difference?
b. List 2 differences in physical properties between oxygen and ozone.
c. Briefly describe how oxygen is converted into ozone.
2. How do CFCs play a role in ozone depletion? Explain and include an equation to demonstrate your answer. (8 points)
3. Answer the following questions about the greenhouse effect: (3 pts each; 9 points total)
a. What is the greenhouse effect?
b. What is the benefit of the greenhouse effect to the Earth?
c. List which gases are considered greenhouse gases.
4. . What is acid rain? Describe how pollution contributes to the formation of the acids H2SO4 and HNO3 in the atmosphere (9 points)
5. What are volatile organic chemicals? Give an example and explain how they get into the air. (5 points)
6. Consider the combustion of gasoline, which is represented by this equation:
2 C8H18(l) + 25 O2(g) ------( 18 H2O(g) + 16 CO2(g)
In 2019, 142.7 billions of gallons of gasoline were used in the United States. Assume that the formula for gasoline is C8H18 and the density is 770 g/L and 1 gal = 3.785 L. (5 pts each; 20 pts total)
a. How many liters of gasoline were used in the United States in 2019?
b. How many grams of gasoline were used in the United States in 2019? (Use the density of gasoline and your answer to “a”, above, to calculate this).
c. If the combustion of gasoline is 99% efficient, how many grams of gasoline were not completely combusted (did not convert to water and carbon dioxide)?
d. For each gram of gasoline that is used, 3.05 g of carbon dioxide, CO2, is produced by combustion. Based on your answer to “b”, determine the grams of CO2 that were produced by the combustion of gasoline in 2019.
Research Essay Questions:
To be sustainable means to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. For our college, sustainability is characterized by the triple-bottom line decision, efforts, and actions that are 1) environmentally viable, 2) economically robust, and 3) socially just and equitable.
Research recent news articles on the effect of sea level rise and ocean acidification on the Maldives. Using at least 2 articles as sources, respond to the questions below (using APA format). The following rubric will be applied to your answers:

The student competently recognizes Sustainability as the triple bottom line. The student is able to apply details to solutions and concerns to the environment, economy and social issues.
|
The student recognizes Sustainability as the triple bottom line. The student is able to apply limited details to solutions and concerns to the environment, economy and social issues. |
The student to some degree recognizes Sustainability as the triple bottom line. The student is not able apply details to solutions and concerns to the environment, economy and social issues.
|
The student does not recognize Sustainability as the triple bottom line. |
40 points possible.
8. Specify the chemical aspect of ocean acidification and its impact on coral reefs.
9. A solution to the environmental damage the Maldives may be facing is global reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. Discuss some ways this can be accomplished. In addition, discuss some potential major economic aspects of these potential solutions.
10. From a societal viewpoint, explore the equitability of the failure of the global community to take any action to curb carbon dioxide emissions, assuming that they play a major role in ocean acidification.
