Apple

One of the largest electronics companies in the United States.

The main business involves electronic products such as computers and mobile phones.

Products are mainly produced in China.

Samsung

One of the largest electronics companies in South Korea.

Engaged in the production of a large number of electronic products, a wide range.

Has a great influence in South Korea.

One of Korea Chaebol Group.

Economy and impact

Apple

Outsourcing product production to China.

The factory created more jobs to increase the local employment rate..

Help the local city construction and development of the factory.

Samsung

One of the biggest chaebols in South Korea.

The leader was jailed for bribing the former president of South Korea.

The leader's father was twice convicted of bribery and corruption.

Apple Production impact

Urban Construction

“a new city was built for Foxconn’s facility with hospitals, undergrounds, international schools…..from what had previously been farmland.”(Cissy) These infrastructures are helpful for residents, and people do not have to stay away from home because of education or medical care.

Increase employment rate

“Hundreds of thousands of migrant workers from Henan and other provinces flocked to the new city.”(Cissy) Migrant workers moved into the city where the factory location to get a profitable job and a better living environment. Many workers want to enter the factory to find a stable job and to obtain a better income.

Samsung Leaders bribe and embezzle company’s funds

Leader bribery

“Mr. Lee had bribed Ms. Park and her friend, Ms. Choi, to obtain the government’s support for moves that were meant to tighten his control over the Samsung conglomerate."(Choe Sang) Samsung’s leader bribed the country’s president to gain their benefits, which is detrimental to the country’s interests. The illegal method also damages Samsung company's image and affects the regular order of the country.

Leader's father convicted twice

“Mr. Lee’s father, Samsung’s chairman, was twice convicted of bribery and other corruption charges but never spent a day in jail, helping to create an image of Samsung as untouchable.”(Choe Sang) Samsung’s leaders have been convicted several times for corruption and bribery, but no one will punish them because of the company’s power and influence. The actions of these leaders have greatly affected the reputation of Samsung. At the same time, it seriously affects the fairness and justice of the law.

Worker issue

Apple

The factory is suspected of violating labor rights.

Workers are required to work too long and hire temporary workers.

Samsung

The working environment contains harmful chemicals.

Factory workers get sick or even die.

Treatment attitudes and methods

Apple

Apple sends experts to work with factory management to ensure that the factory complies with standards.

Samsung

Samsung only agreed to compensate and apologize to employees who are sick at work “The compensation agreement does not recognize that Samsung’s workplace is directly related to the illness of certain employees.” (BBC)

“The company had Samsung Electronics had not "fully and completely" handled potential health risks on production lines that make chips and LCD displays.”(BBC)

Social responsibility

Under the influence of the new coronavirus worldwide, Apple actively took action.

“Apple donated 10 million masks for health professionals in the United States and Europe, which is sourced through its supply networks.” (Sayantani).

“Apple has donated its promised amount of 20 million Chinese yuan to support six hospitals in Hubei.” (Sayantani)

Apple products are a better choice for members, and non- profit organizations centered on human rights should choose products with a better corporate image.

Apple has a positive attitude towards errors and is willing to consider for workers.

Indirectly assists the local economic development of the factory in the production of products, and improves the living standards of local people.

Apple’s social responsibility is powerful, often engaged in charitable activities.

The organizations that choose to purchase Apple’s products also support Apple’s positive actions and help the further development of the global economy and human rights.
