Short Case:

I am currently interning at a wedding and event planning company called Aquafuzion. The company has different department such as, planning, floral, and studio team. My position is a studio assistant, and my duties are managing all the new flower order and compose business documents for my boss.

The problem that I face during my internship is doing personal work for my boss. On September 13th, my boss called and said that she was busy with meeting clients in down town L.A. Therefore, she needed my help to pick her kids up from school. In fact, it is my first time babysitting her kids. I played with her kids for a few times before, and they know me well, but I was not sure if I could babysit them. However, my boss believed that I am the person who can help her to take care her kids, as she has seen how well we get along well. When I got the news that I need to leave the office and went for her personal errands, I did not hesitate to ask why I needed to help her up with her family’s matter. At the time, I did not really think about it because I only do what was needed to be done. I help her to babysit her kids until late in afternoon. I did not have my lunch on the regular hours because when my boss came back, it was already 5pm.

As the first babysitting went well, I helped my boss to take care of her kids 2 more times. I did not complain anything to her because I think she really needed help and I might be the only one she trusted. However, when she tried to ask me again on September 20th, I politely decline and told her I needed to do the urgent work, which eventually took up the whole entire day. If I were to help her babysit her kids, I will need to spend extra time to finish my work. Also, I really need my break time because that is the only period of time that I can take a quick rest and refresh my mind. She did not say anything more after I said no, but I know she was a little bit upset. I know she only asked me to do it because I am a good babysitter. I hope after I declined from babysitting the last time, she will not feel disappointed and keep me on the same position in the company.

I would like to know what is the best way to talk to her that I have my internship duties and do not have extra time to do her personal problems without affecting our relationship. I do not want her to think that I do not want to assist her when she really needs help. I know my boss really like me and trust me, but I really need my time to do my designated assignment. Will it be ethically permissible for me to have a conversation with her and tell her that I have my daily work that is needed to be done, so that she knows I really do have time to take care her personal or family matter?
