Goal: This research report is intended for you to demonstrate your ability to conduct basic scientific research, apply scientific methods, and evaluate the author’s claims. Task: Find a topic from the following areas. Your topic might be as specific or as general as you like:

• Nutrition and energy for life • Medical imaging techniques • Acids and bases and equilibrium.

a. Example: Explore the effects of changes in CO2 and/or HCO3 – concentrations

on the internal body pH and associated compensation. • Carbohydrate metabolism.

a. Example: Compare rates of the metabolization of different types of carbohydrates. Are all carbohydrates metabolized at the same rate?

• Organic chemistry in modern medicine • Mutation and genetic diseases.

a. Example: Endogenous or exogenous factors contributing to diseases, health conditions, and mutations.

You will then conduct research and write a report. Your report must fulfill the following criteria:

1. Your hypothesis. o This will be the hypothesis your report is trying to validate/reject.

i. Hypothesis example: “If discriminate plots of angiosperms are observed in the morning and at noon (method), there will be a higher frequency of pollinator visits at noon (claim), attributable to the ectothermic characteristic of the pollinators (reason for claim).

2. Data gathering. o The data must come from at least two peer-reviewed articles (maximum four).

3. Methods. o Be sure to explain the data gathering methods.

i. Example: comment on the independent, dependent, controlled variables.

4. Analysis of data. o Example:

i. Charts and graphs and statement regarding the statistical significance of the results (p value is <0.5) and whether the hypothesis is supported.

ii. A discussion section that includes a reiteration of the hypothesis and whether results support the following. If the results do not support the hypothesis, what are some potential reasons for this occurrence?

iii. Limitations of the study and the importance of the research. 5. Conclusion.

The acceptable length of this report will be 1.5-2 pages (excluding any visual images/charts/tables, etc.), double-spaced, size 12 fonts. Be sure to properly reference any charts, graphs, and tables that you did not create yourself. All references must be cited in the ACS format.
