Checkpoint for Certification Plan The desire of all mental health-nursing students is to do well in class and

become proficient in the field. The acquisition of skills and related competencies is

not a one-day affair. One of the critical steps that all nurses have to pass through tp

become competent is being certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center,

ANCC. Certification establishes the commitment of the nurse in providing quality

care to patients with mental health challenges (Nolan, Kimseller, Joroner, John, Berg

& Jassica, 2013). Besides, certification makes the professionals stand out in an

interview and instill a sense of confidence to the recipients of care. Providing care at

the highest degree of competence are the exact definitions of mental health nurses.

The purpose of this assignment is to highlight the progress and plans for mental health

nursing certification. For registered nurses to obtain certification as advanced practice nurses in

psychiatry, they need to have graduated with a master’s degree, doctoral degree, or ant

post-graduate degree in an adult mental health and psychiatric nurse practitioner

program (Nolan et al., 2013). The registered nurses also need to have at least 500

clinical hours that are supervised by a reputable facility. The program also requires

one to enroll and complete courses in advanced pathophysiology, pharmacology, and

advanced physical/ health assessment (Shea, 2016). For these requirements to be met there is a need for nurses to develop relevant

time management skills. Planning their time well will ensure that they balance their

classwork time and the one that is spent in clinical areas. The nurses need to make

sure that they have become conversant with all the concepts, practice restrictions as

well as the rules and regulations that influence both negatively and positively on the

profession. The knowledge on these seemingly external factors will enable them to

avoid being caught on the negative side of the law and law agencies. Mental health

nurses should understand the laws on NP practice in different states of the country and

make plans on how they will adjust what they have learned in class. The certification examination is an area that students must work smart to pass.

While preparing for certification, it is imperative for the nurses to read and revise on

key areas of the profession that will be examined at the end of the training. This calls

for resilience on the part of the learner to adhere to all the instructions. As this course

nears its end, the learning is knowledgeable enough not just to treat and manage

psychiatric conditions but also contribute to the growing body of research in the field. From what the student has been working on from the first week of the course all the

way to the fourth, there is no doubt that they possess all it takes to attain certification

requirements. The learning has been not only rigorous but also specific on relevant

issues for nurses at this level of training. The student has completed the tasks which had been scheduled on her

timeline. Some of the tasks include completing the 500 clinical hours that one must

have before they can apply for the licensing examination. The student is in the process

of applying for the PMNHP examination that is under the American Nursing

Accrediting Center. The other aspect of that is critical at this moment is selecting a

state where she will practice and do the examination (Nolan et al., 2013). The vast

part of what needs to be done has already been attained, and the student is prepared

for licensing.
