Question 1

Health inequalities arise from the societal conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age. Why do you think such inequalities are more prevalent in third world countries and are less prevalent in the industrialized ones?  What are some of the key contributors to common health inequalities?

Question 2

The typical American diet is too high in saturated fat, sodium, and sugar and too low in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, calcium, and fiber. Such a diet significantly increases the risk of numerous diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, obesity, hypertension, stroke, osteoporosis, and many cancers (colon, prostate, mouth, throat, lung, stomach). Overall, unhealthy eating habits and inactivity affect quality of life and cause disabilities. What do you think needs to be done in order to reduce the intake of saturated fat, sodium, and sugar in our products? Who is responsible for monitoring the acceptable levels in these three categories?

Question 3

Today, some healthcare professionals and research scientists are concluding the following: Keeping physically fit means keeping mentally fit as well. That means finding healthy ways to deal with what psychologists would typically call negative emotions such as anger, aggression, aggravation, and fear and reinforcing the positive emotions and behaviors in people’s lives. Do you agree with this assessment? Also, what impact does mental health have on a person’s overall physical health?

Question 4

People’s dietary choices are shaped by various social and cultural factors. Additionally, people’s ideas about what constitutes a good or acceptable meal differ. Religion also plays a role in the choices and subsequent selection of foods consumed in certain societies. What role does nutrition and the proper education and promotion about it play in chronic disease prevention? Also, whose responsibility is it to educate individuals on healthy food choices? Is it family, school, or the government?

Question 1

Please provide a quick overview of a Transtheoretical Model that specifically outlines its key characteristics. There are known research studies conducted and some strong evidence of successful implementation of the principles of this model in the area of smoking cessation. Please outline and briefly talk about two of the required interventions applicable to each of the five stages of change of this model: pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance.

Question 2

There is growing evidence that a person’s race, ethnicity, gender, income, disability, sexual orientation, and geographic location determine the likelihood of many chronic diseases. Many public health promotion community programs are trying to reduce chronic diseases by focusing on the common risk factors of tobacco use, physical inactivity, and poor nutrition. Please outline some of the commonly used disease prevention strategies that focus on high-risk health behaviors.

Question 3

Why is access to the comprehensive, quality healthcare services important? What does this access specifically impact, in terms of people’s health outcomes? What role does an effective health promotion program play in access to health care?

Question 4

The Theory of Planned Behavior concludes that there are six key components that determine a person’s actual control over their behavior. These components are attitudes, behavioral intention, subjective norms, social norms, perceived power, and perceived behavioral control. Please outline/indicate some of the key characteristics of the attitudes and the social norms components.
