Character Analysis Essay (10 points)

Writing Prompt

Assignment:

· Choose a character from one of the three stories that we discussed so far in class.

· Compose an insightful Character analysis

· Your Character analysis should give insightful commentary about the character

· Need to support by direct quotes from the short story

· Consider that you are setting out to prove something about this character

· You will need to identify three (3) character traits

· Discuss and analyze those traits

· Then come to some conclusion about the character based on the analysis of the traits

· Length---The paper should be two full pages.

· Keep your paper in 3rd person---no 1st and 2nd person pronouns

· Avoid Slang and non-specific words (thing, guy, a lot, kid, etc.)….also informal

· Tense shifts…write in all present or all past tense…be consistent.

· Do Not underline or italicize book titles

Requirements:

Thesis Statement:

· Your thesis should be a three part sentence.

· It should NEVER be a question.

· It should be the last sentence of the intro paragraph.

· The thesis is a road map for your reader to follow your argument

· It should do the organizing for you.

Topic Sentence:

· Body paragraphs should provide a topic sentence

· The rest of the paragraph should provide context for a quote or a paraphrase example.

· Then you should provide that example

· After you provide that example, you should explain how it supports your thesis statement

· DO NOT merely tell your reader what the quote means; this can lead to a summary

· You need to analyze

· All quotes should be cited in MLA format.

· However because you only have one source, the book, the only necessary information in your parenthetical citation should be the author’s last name and page number from which the quote came from).

The Conclusion:

· tie all three character traits together

· tell the reader the significance or importance of the ideas you have been analyzing

· Clincher : Try to end the paper with a short sentence that reinforces your argument
