Raising Money Through Business or Sales Activities

Chapter 9

WHAT TO CONSIDER

RESEARCH WHAT OTHER AGENCIES HAVE DONE

CONSIDER TAX RULES FOR YOUR ORGANIZATION

ALL PROFITS IN A NON-PROFIT MUST GO BACK TO THE ORGANIZATION AND NOT PERSONALLY BENEFIT AN INDIVIDUAL

CREATE YOUR OWN BUSINESS IDEA

CONSIDER HOW REALISTIC YOUR IDEA IS

LOOK AT WHAT YOUR CUSTOMERS WANT OR NEED IF YOU WANT TO DEVELOP A FOR-PROFIT BUSINESS TO PROVIDE FUNDS FOR YOUR NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION

START SMALL

DEVELOP A BUSINESS PLAN

MINIMIZE RISK BY STARTING SMALL AND HAVING A GOOD SOLID BUSINESS PLAN

SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Can be a non-profit organization that engages in a for-profit business to provide funds for their mission: Girl Scouts selling cookies is an example

Can also be a for-profit organization that uses its profits, or part of its profits, for a social good; Tom’s Shoes is an example of a business that gives a pair of shoes away to a poor child with no shoes in South America for every pair of shoes they sell

A New Business Model Social Entrepreneurship

Do Your Research

What have other agencies done to raise funds or serve clients?

Client-based businesses are those programs where people are trained to do a task and get paid for it, like a sheltered workshop, or jobs in shelters, or training programs for the physically or mentally challenged; these services are not the best for fundraising efforts

Organizations that create businesses to offset the costs of their main non-profit program may include businesses like thrift stores, bakeries, soup kitchens, & creating and selling artwork

Consider a low risk business plan with little investment and start small

Brainstorm with your Board and staff

Check out the list on page 294-295

Create a Business Plan

Develop a budget

Who will be responsible for what tasks?

Create timeline

What type of business are you looking to develop?

Talk to other similar businesses to determine the risks

Think about your target audience

Find your start-up money

Make a Difference
