In 2009, 10 million Americans were victims of ID theft, which resulted in $48 billion lost. Social Security Numbers (SSN) and Social Insurance Numbers (SIN) are primary identifiers in the states, which makes them targets for identity theft perpetrators to take them in order to make new accounts in a victim’s name. Not all banks will refund identity theft victims money if their accounts are hacked. In the event that this happens or victims do not refute suspicious charges within a specified period of time (generally 60 days), the bank will not put the money back into the victim’s account, which has led consumers to lose billions of dollars every year. Banks by default do not want to believe that you were scammed, but rather that you are a bad debtor. This has led to the responsibility to be pushed on the consumer, which leaves it up to the consumer to provide the necessary documentation to prove that they were not the person who made illegitimate charges. New account fraud (resulting in stolen SSNs and SINs) can lead consumers to have bad credit, which can inhibit people to buy homes. It has also cost people to go to jail for the crimes of an identity theft and pay thousands of dollars in attorney fees.

In 2011, nearly 72% of data breaches were at companies with fewer than 100 employees. Some ways that businesses can protect themselves from data breaches is by updating their anti-virus software, companies should also invest in additional types of security measures other than anti- virus software (i.e. patch management, intrusion detection, and intrusion prevention), files should be backed up (i.e. Network Attached Storage (NAS)), mobile security should be ensured, and end users should be educated on things like what corporate information is and why it must remain secure.

The UK’s National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is a world leader in biometric security systems. Merely being able to enter the laboratory involves a high-tech door lock that is triggered by handprint identification. Biometrics help identify or recognize people on the basis of their physical and behavioral characteristics, which includes technologies like using a fingerprint or facial recognition. Other means of recognition where biometrics can be used to identify a person include recognizing things like their vein patterns or their signatures. There is enough distinguishable information between any two people in order to identify them even including

identical twins. The NPL is working on creating the latest technology in order to track and identify individuals, which can be used in airports or banks. Police can use mobile devices that have facial recognition technology, which can provide instant checks against a national database.

Hotels.com claimed that an auditor’s computer was stolen, which contained the personal information (i.e. credit card information) of 230,000 customers. Even if a laptop is password protected, they can be compromised. The data can even be compromised by pulling out a computer’s hard drive. People should keep track of their monthly statements and reconcile any unauthorized charges within 30 to 60 days. Even though companies have privacy policies in place, it does not necessarily mean that company employees follow them.
