Britain’s biggest selling Sunday newspaper, News of the World, was shut down by its owner, Rupert Murdoch. Over 5 million people read the newspaper. British police revealed that nearly 4,000 victims were found of illegal eavesdropping. Among the victims included families of the London terror attacks and relatives of British soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq were targeted. The scandal has its origins all the way back to 2005 when Buckingham Palace suspected that people were listening in on the voicemails of Prince William. It has also been revealed that the newspaper has hacked famous British celebrities like Sienna Miller and Hugh Grant. The British Prime Minister, David Cameron, launched two inquiries: one into phone hacking and the other in newspapers ethics. Cameron hired the former News of the World editor, Andy Coulson, as his communications chief who later resigned from his post in January 2011 and was subsequently arrested based on the newspaper’s scandal.

If entities register domain names that other people have rights in it becomes cybersquatting. For example, cybersquatting can entail domain names with various forms of misspelling. This can become a concern for businesses when people go to such websites because they have some mention of a business’s original domain name, which can ultimately lead to businesses losing money as a result even if it is not much. Cybersquatter’s can redirect users to another website (i.e. gambling website, a competitor’s website) or have a page that is filled with pay-per-click links that are related to the domain name that can direct users to a competitor’s website or the business’s website, which ultimately prove to be quite costly for a business.

Excessive computer use can lead to occasional and even long-term health issues. The most common complaints are upper limb disorders (i.e. Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)), eye problems, headaches, and stress or fatigue. Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) can affect the fingers, hands, arms, or shoulders and can result in mild aches and pains through to chronic tissue or muscular complaints. These health problems are a result from high speed typing, the intensive use of a mouse, or a poor working posture. Short-term computer related eye problems are undeniable and tend to be associated with sore eyes, headaches, blurred/softened vision, and sometimes a residual after image, which are experienced for short periods. Excessive stress and fatigue result from long periods of dexterous activity and visual concentration. Some people find it uncomfortable to have to conform to software or hardware that constrains how they work or which regularly crash or causes them to constantly have to wait. Some measures that can be taken in order to reduce the health risks include ensuring that the screen image is clear, stable and free from glare and/or reflections, the keyboard should be positioned with sufficient space to support the wrists, breaks should be taken from intensive mouse activity, the work chair should be comfortable (i.e. be fully adjustable), and periods of rest from the screen should also be taken.

Glen Busch never thought any of his thoughts on Facebook would cause him any problems until he posted his comments on the tragic shooting in Tucson. His posting was “You can’t shoot people you disagree with.” A day later, Busch got an email from his boss that he was being let go. Civil Rights Attorney, Kristin Case, says that employers have every right to snoop around on their employees’ personal pages if they can access something it finds objectionable even if it is legal it can be grounds for firing. Generally, private employees do not have any free speech rights. 66% of employers say that they monitor their employees’ Internet connections because they have concerns over litigation, productivity, and security breaches. Busch in the end was given his job back, but his situation serves as a lesson that anyone can learn from.
