Our textbook discusses ways to build and maintain a high performance
workforce. As Deming said, the human resource is the only one that can synchronize;
i.e., product output who’s value is greater then the sum of it’s parts. For this reason,
maintaining a high performance workforce is absolutely essential since it can be a
a source of a long-term and sustainable competitive advantage.
Modern theory’s in workforce management are in large part a reaction to the
principal of scientific management, which was a workforce management theory
developed by Frederick Taylor. This theory maintains that foremen and workers lack
the skills and education needed to plan there work and that management should
therefore assume this responsibility. While firm’s that adopted the principles of
scientific management did see increases in productivity there was many hidden costs
associated with this management style. Workers began to feel disconnected from their
work, and quality began to decline as the responsibility for quality was placed on
inspecters as opposed to workers.
Most modern workforce management philosophies actively seek weys to keep
workers intellectually and emotionally disengaged from their work. Studies has shown
that workers who are emotionally invested in their work tend to produce products that
are of higher quality, can be produced at a lower cost, and can also be produced with
less waist. This is one of the most compiling reasons why modern workforce
managment theories that leverage the workforce’s creativity have become so popular.
