What did you learn from this chapter?
I have gained vital insights into adult education, including formal, nonformal and informal adult education, participants of adult education, and the motivation and barriers to adult education. Formal adult education takes place in an educational institution and is based on structured learning through a set of curricula while credentials availed to adult learners. Nonformal adult education is non credential and occurs in educational institutions while informal adult education is lifelong education from daily life activities. One of the key issues is that participation of adults in education plays a crucial role elimination of some inequalities. In essence, the adult education serves to impart literacy skills and other basic skills into adults to ensure they build capacity participate in formal employment and become self-reliant.
Many of the studies that were illustrated in the chapter show that white, middle-class, individuals typically engage in adult education over other races and classes. I learned the reason for this is called barriers. The barriers most notably mentioned included lack of time and money, these are actually consistent with the reasons my colleagues, friends and family have not engaged in adult participation.
