Student Name Chapter 1 Essay Question The first way that Americans can engage in democracy is by voting. One of America's founding principles is the idea of Self-Government. This idea has been around since before America was even established, with the pilgrims creating the mayflower compact at Plymouth Rock, and creating their government. Now, while Americans are not creating and signing documents, self- government is still carried out through the choosing of representatives through voting. Voting is arguably the best way to participate in democracy, as Americans are choosing who they want to best represent their beliefs. A second way that Americans can participate in democracy is by running for public office. While voting is more accessible, some Americans feel that the people on their ballot do not accurately represent their beliefs. They can then fill this blank by running for office themselves. Democracy is governed by the people, and some Americans choose to participate by representing their community. Finally, a third way that someone can participate in democracy is by campaigning for their choice of representatives. They can do this by advertising their choice on social media, attending rallies, talking to their community, or even going door-to- door. This is a way Americans can participate in democracy because it not only increases the chance of their representative being elected, but they can also invite other Americans to participate. In my opinion, the role of the government should be to help the people. The government's power comes from the people, so it should be used to assist them. Governmental decisions should be influenced by a need to improve the lives of Americans, and not for personal gain. While it is not reasonable to assume that the government can help every citizen, it should be expected that they

try. The representatives chosen by the people must work together to help all of America, not just
