In the European Union (EU) region, achieving energy efficiency has been a goal for many years, and this chapter focuses on comparing the existing projects and policies that are promoting climate change (Navarra & Milio, 2015). In supporting projects that reduce the use of energy, a system dynamics model is vital as it utilizes urban governance and policy through the use of information and technology to achieve an urban development that is sustainable.
The projects discussed comprise of 3eHouses aimed at saving the environment and energy across Europe. In this project, an ICT-based solution that is replicable and integrated is tested and implemented. With this project in action, social housing in Europe will reduce their energy consumption by 25%. This will be possible giving tenants actual consumption feedback and in turn, providing personalized recommendations for improving their energy consumption. The impact of this project is having real-time audits on the usage of energy and giving accurate information on better utilization of energy.
BECA—balanced European conservation approach is used in the comparative by having the main objective of reducing the European consumption of energy in social housing significantly in a move to reduce emissions. A balance is achieved by considering diverse forms of energy. Best Energy, Built Environment Sustainability and Technology in Energy is another project whose aim is to integrate lighting and building hence improving energy efficiency by monitoring and management. Buildings can reduce the energy use of 12% in buildings and double in street lighting (Navarra & Bianchi, 2013).
The many policies that have been created to achieve reduced energy consumption have been compared with the available policies and the best implemented. From having a SMART CAMPUS building where students are taught how to best interact with energy management systems to those that utilize ICT based solutions that monitor and adapt its consumption of water and energy. Better policy implementation is achieved.
