For example, a GIS helps to make sure electricity is present when you flip a light switch. A GIS takes the numbers and words from databases and puts them on a map. Putting data on a map allows you to ask questions such as where, why, and how. Location based information provided by a GIS can help you to make make better decisions. GIS can make maps coded by values from the database to help illustrate patterns. For example, to better understand traffic accidents we might first group collisions by police grid then as hot spots then finally we can show where citations are issued.

An executive information system (EIS) is a specialized decision support system that supports senior level executives within an organization. A decision support system (DSS) is a system that models information to support managers and business professionals during the decision-making process. A DSS can perform a number of different analyses including sensitivity analysis, what- if analysis, and goal seeking analysis. Sensitivity analysis gauges the impact of changes in one variable on the entire system. What-if analysis checks the impact of a change in on variable on the proposed solution. Goal seeking analysis finds the inputs necessary to achieve the goals such as a desired level of sales. An EIS typically contains data from both external and internal sources while usually a DSS only gathers information internally. EIS offers capabilities such as consolidation (the aggregation of information), drill down (enables users to acquire layers of detailed information), and slice and dice (looks at information from different perspectives). A digital dashboard integrates information from multiple components and tailors this information to individual preferences. This can be used to identify the status of key information or critical success factors; it offers tables and graphs, scrolls of headline news, alerts, and resolution status. Overall, an EIS allows a decision maker to organize and interact with the information as well as supports important decision-making processes.
