Instructional and Program Evaluation: Homework

1. Identify a teacher that you consider to be excellent. Using the characteristics of effective teachers described in this chapter, list the qualities that made this teacher excellent. Give an example to support each quality.

2. Imagine that you are a new Microbiology teacher in a MLT program. In this position, you must provide an evaluation of the effectiveness of your teaching. Your evaluation must include feedback from at least three different sources. List the three sources you will use and describe how you will collect the information.

3. In recent years, NAACLS has placed a greater emphasis on program outcomes such as graduation rates and certification examination rates. What do you think is the rationale for this emphasis on outcomes? Are there any limitations or concerns a program might have about the emphasis on outcomes?

4. Go to the NAACLS website (www.naacls.org) and find the NAACLS Standards Compliance Guide (Revised April 2014). What does NAACLS set as criteria for a program’s certification exam pass rates, graduation rates and job placement rates (Standard II.B)? What happens if a program does not meet those criteria?
