3. What is the lack of “person-environment fit” that Belsky refers to in regards to puberty for many people in Western culture? How might this be different in more traditional cultures? What does “puberty rite” mean?

4. Define menarche, spermarche, and the secular trend in puberty. Identify the main contributing factor to this secular trend.

5. Describe the role of the adrenal androgens, testosterone, and estrogens in puberty for boys and girls.

6. Review Figure 8.2. Understand the factors that are involved in the timing of puberty and what the HPG Axis is.

7. Know the difference between primary and secondary sexual characteristics.

8. Define the puberty growth spurt. Describe the timing of puberty for girls compared to boys. How long does the complete process of puberty take on average? Describe your understanding of how far apart boys and girls are when it comes to the timing of puberty.
