Case Study – Episode 7 Program Transcript

FEMALE  SPEAKER: It's almost time.

FEMALE  SPEAKER: Yeah.

FEMALE  SPEAKER: It's hard watching them  leave when you know some have no place to go.

FEMALE  SPEAKER: Yeah.

FEMALE  SPEAKER: I wanted to let you know that Bill called back  and said that he would be willing to be the facilitator  at the meeting.

FEMALE  SPEAKER: That's the best news  I've had so far.

FEMALE  SPEAKER: Is  it really  going to be that bad? I mean, I think creating a homeless  shelter  for  teens  and having it built here at the center  makes  sense.

FEMALE  SPEAKER: It is  a good idea. Especially  for  some of these kids  and their   friends  who don't eat anything except for  what we provide every  day. They  really   don't have a place to go when we have to close the doors  for  the evening. They   are literally  living on the streets, because that's all there is. Yet, before we can convince the mayor  and city  council of this  need, and for  them  to provide the necessary  support, we have to get the community  on board first.

FEMALE  SPEAKER: Is  that going to be difficult?

FEMALE  SPEAKER: Well, when I first reached out to the community, a lot of what I got was  NIMBY  comments. You know, we want to support you, but not in my backyard.

FEMALE  SPEAKER: It was  really  that bad?

FEMALE  SPEAKER: Well, Tina Simpson, the president of the community   association, is  worried that a homeless  shelter  at the center  would drive down property  values  in the neighborhood. Rick  Saunders, who is  with the local business  improvement association, and a member  of the chamber  of commerce, he's concerned that homeless  young kids  hanging around the nearby  stores  and shops  would drive business  away, and create a dead zone or  worse. He believes   that kids  will attack  shoppers  or  simply  steal or  loot from  local stores  in order  to buy  drugs. The only  positive reaction I got was  from  Anne Cook. You know, the author  with the bookstore over  on 11th Street.

FEMALE  SPEAKER: Well, that is  good news. I know she helped us  before with her  very  generous  donations  and in-­kind publicity.

FEMALE  SPEAKER: She may  have even more of a vested interest in a homeless  shelter  for  kids, as  she was  once homeless  herself. And now we have Bill Williams, who will help in facilitating the discussion.

FEMALE  SPEAKER: Bill wanted to know what time the meeting is.

FEMALE  SPEAKER: It's next Tuesday  evening at 5:00.

ANNOUNCER: Attention. Attention. The New Harbor  Community  Center  is   closing in five minutes. Five minutes. Please begin cleaning up and putting away   all equipment and center  materials. Thank  you.

FEMALE  SPEAKER: Hopefully  these kids  will make it through another  night.

FEMALE  SPEAKER: Yeah.
