PERFORMANCE ASSIGNMENTS AND SCORING RUBRICS

Assignment Based on Chapter 2:

Developing Learning Objectives for an Instructional Unit from State Standards

Purpose: State standards often are not stated specifically enough to be learning objectives for students. To plan a unit of instruction, and to assess students’ learning outcomes, you will need to be clear about what achievement is expected of each student. The purpose of this assignment is for you to examine state standards in relation to a unit of instruction you wish to teach. Then, you will practice writing learning objectives that both express what students are to learn in the unit and that fit well within the state standards.

Note: State standards may not be defined for every grade, and, typically, they are not defined for every subject area and instructional unit. Pupils, however, are expected to achieve the standards. Every teacher is expected to teach in a way that leads to improving achievement of state standards, even though the standards do not always match the grade level or the subject topics a teacher happens to be teaching. Thus, if the grade level and the unit you choose to use to complete this assignment do not exactly match the state standards for that grade, you should still find the standards that are most closely aligned with the unit, and develop learning objectives for the unit that clearly lead to attainment of those standards.

Directions:

1. Identify a grade level, an instructional unit, and topical area that you might want to teach.

1. Using the Internet, locate your state’s academic standards that most closely match the grade level and unit you have selected. Or, you may use the Common Core State Standards (www.corestandards.org), the Next Generation Science Standards (http://www.nextgenscience.org) or the National Curriculum Standards for Social Studies (http://www.socialstudies.org/standards).

1. Record the basic information about the unit on the attached sheet.

1. Write one or more of the academic standards that most closely match the focus of the unit for that grade. Be sure to document the statement(s) of the standard(s) by giving a complete citation.

1. Write 3 to 5 specific learning objectives that you have derived from this particular state standard. These learning objectives must match your unit and must be chosen to lead to achievement of all or part of the state standard(s) you have included in Step 4 above.

1. These learning objectives statements must conform to all three of the criteria for stating learning objectives given in Chapter 2 of Brookhart & Nitko (2015). That is, each specific learning objective must (1) be student centered, (2) contain a performance verb that describes what students will do to demonstrate achievement, and (3) state the specific content in which students will apply that performance.

1. Write a very brief paragraph describing how you would go about teaching these particular learning objectives for this unit, beginning with how you would share them with students.

1. Use the attached form for completing your assignment. Note: If you plan to include this assignment in your personal portfolio, you may wish to change the appearance of the form or design your own form to suit your portfolio design. Feel free to do so, but you must have all of the elements from the attached form completed for this assignment.

1. The assignment is due two weeks after it is assigned.

Scoring Guide for Assignment Based on Chapter 2:

Developing Learning Objectives for an Instructional Unit from State Standards

Criteria

Total points possible

Does student state a grade level, a subject, and unit title that are appropriate?

2—Student states grade level, appropriate subject, and unit.

1—Not all are given, or subject or unit is somewhat inappropriate for grade.

Does student make an appropriate summary statement of the main purpose of the unit?

2—Summary purpose is educationally valid and clear.

1—Summary purpose is somewhat educationally valid, or lacks clarity.

Does the student correctly state the state's academic standard that is best matched to the unit? (If more than one standard is given, the standard that best fits the unit should be included.)

2—A statement of the state academic standard that clearly shares the same focus as this unit is given.

1—The standard(s) given is not the best match for the focus of this unit.

Does the student give appropriate reference citations for the state standard (Standard number or code, with URL if found on internet).

2—Complete and correct reference citation provided.

1—Reference citation provided but is incomplete.

Does the student provide a minimum of 3 specific learning objectives that are appropriate for the unit purpose and the state standard?

4—At least 3 specific learning objectives are given and all are appropriate for the unit and the standard.

3—One objective is inappropriate for the unit or standard, but at least 3 are given.

2—Either more than one objective is inappropriate for the unit or standard, or fewer than 3 objectives are given.

1—The objectives are incomplete as well as inappropriate for the unit.

Are the specific learning objectives likely to lead to achievement of all or a significant part of the standard(s)?

2—Achieving these specific learning objectives will very likely lead to achievement of the standard(s).

1—Some of the learning objectives are not well aligned with standard and may not lead to achievement of the standard.

Is each specific learning objective student-centered, performance-centered, and content-centered?

4—Each specific learning objective conforms to all three criteria.

3—1 of the learning objectives does not conform to all three criteria.

2—More than one of the learning objectives do not conform to all three criteria, or too few objectives are provided.

1—None of the learning objectives conform to the criteria.

Is the student's written plan for teaching these particular learning objectives reasonable and coherent?

2—The plan for teaching these objectives is both educationally reasonable and coherent.

1—The plan for teaching these objectives either lacks reasonableness or coherence.

Are the students’ plans for sharing these learning objectives with students reasonable and effective for communicating with students?

2—The plan for sharing these objectives is both educationally reasonable and effective for communicating with students.

1—The plan for sharing these objectives either lacks reasonableness or would not be effective for communicating with students.
