Pre-Assignment (Things you should consider to prepare for this assignment):
Read your textbook about You and I Language (Chapter 5). What do you think You Language means? What do you think I Language mean? Can you recognize the difference between a You Language statement and an I Language statement? Why should we avoid the using words like "always" and "never" when confronting someone?
Assignment: (Actual assignment that you will submit)
1. Read each scenario. 2. Change the underlined quotation in each scenario into a positive I Language statement. 3. Example I Language statement: I feel ________ (insert emotion you feel) when ______ (describe
factual behavior).
Correct use of I Language: "I feel frustrated when the clothes are not hung up after they get out of the dryer because when it gets wrinkly, it adds more stress to my day because I'll have to spend time ironing them." Incorrect use of I Language: "I think you are so frustrating."
Scenario #1: You and your significant other have agreed that once every week, you will vacuum and they will take out the trash. After a long day of work, you come home to a trash can completely full. You say to your significant other, "You never help me with the chores!"
Scenario #2: You are having coffee with your best friend. She's asking you about how your vacation went, but every time you try to talk, she cuts you off and talks about how her vacation went. You say to your best friend, "You always cut me off when I try to speak."
Scenario #3: You and your colleague are having a discussion, which then turns into an argument. While your colleague was communicating to you how hurt he felt, you were intently listening and giving him the time to say what he wants to say. When you start to speak, he interjects and starts arguing his position again. You say to your colleague, "You never want to hear my side of the story!"
