Mixed Methods Research

Mixed methods research, which means using both qualitative and quantitative methods and procedures, is governed by specific considerations in all schools at Capella University. Mixed-methods research is complex and arduous, and can require special permissions, additional coursework, and a mentor with expertise in mixed methods. Further, mixed methods dissertations usually take longer, and therefore are more costly both in time and money.

Each of the Capella doctoral schools has specific requirements for learners wishing to pursue mixed designs.

School of Public Service Leadership

In the School of Public Service Leadership, mixed method studies may be conducted with written permission from the PSL Research Chair. Researchers seeking permission to employ a mixed method research design are required to provide evidence of successful completion of the advanced quantitative methods (PSL8122) and advanced qualitative methods (PSL8123). In order to support the Researcher, the mentor must have experience using and supervising doctoral level mixed methods research. In addition, the Researcher must have a strong rationale to conduct a mixed method study that demonstrates the relationship between the quantitative and qualitative components of the study. At the time the Researcher submits their topic for approval, include the letter to the PSL Research Chair seeking permission to conduct a mixed-method study.
