Historical Analysis Worksheet
Step 1 KNOWLEDGE: Identify the argument or the problem that needs to be solved. Questions should be asked to acquire a deep understanding about the problem.
What is the question you need to answer in your presentation?
In the presentation, the underlying question that needs to be answered is; how can we deal with economic changes?
What are some focused questions you can ask to have a deeper understanding of the topic? Include at least two questions.
How can a person sail through an economic depression while ensuring minimum negative effects?
How can economies recover from depressions fast and sustainably?
Step 2 COMPREHENSION: Understand the situation or issue and the facts aligned with it using the sources you collected and the course material. If needed, locate additional sources that align with your topic.
1. What have you learned about your topic in present-day America so far?
· What have you learned about your historical issues and the context in which they occurred that can help you better understand that same issue today?
Several lessons have been drawn from the materials on the Great Depression. Key among them is that jobs are people’s greatest assets. Without them, the economy can easily go down in ruins. In addition, it is advisable for people to save enough pension to see them through at least two years after they retire. The money acts as insurance against uncertainties that are inherent in modern economies. The sources also include recovery strategies for macro and micro economies that may be used to alleviate the negative effects of an economic depression and in recovery (Schanzenbach et al., 2016).
What are some facts or evidence you will use to help inform your presentation to your nonprofit group?
· What evidence is missing? Where might you find it?
Some of the facts that have been provided that would inform my presentation include what should be expected of an economic depression. More specifically, an economic downturn is to be expected which is characterized by a decrease in economic activity which could negatively affect the operations of the non-profit group.
Step 3 APPLICATION: Build a linkage between the information and resources. Using the information above, answer the following questions:
1. Are there any links or similarities you see in your sources of information? What are they?
· Are there any discrepancies?
The sources are similar in that they report of the widespread unemployment rates and decrease in economic development brought about by the depression. The articles also urge people to stay prepared for job changes that can occur after a depression. However, they have discrepancies in the causes of the economic downturns, with one source citing climate changes as the reason for while another attributes increased loans as the reason for economic downturn, as was the case for the 2008 recession (Tol, 2018).
Step 4 ANALYZE: Analyze in order to identify the situation or issue, the strong points, the weak points, and the challenges faced while solving the problem.
1. What are your strong pieces of evidence?
The sources agree in several issues. For instance, there is consensus that people and organizations need to be ready for economic downturns caused by depressions through such ways as having a variety of income sources and finding ways to cut overhead costs during the downturns to ensure that the organization stays afloat (Danforth et al., 2017).
What are your weak pieces of evidence?
There sources provide conflicting causes for the economic recessions, including climate changes and excessive lending by financial institutions.
What challenges do you have in using this evidence to make an argument about your issue?
By using conflicting sources, it is a challenge to provide evidence that is convincing enough to support the argument.
Step 5 SYNTHESIS: Summarize your argument around the issue or situation, and be sure to include the main ideas that need to be communicated to your group. Make sure you are answering the question you identified in Step 1 of this worksheet.
Summarize your argument: Dealing with economic changes is an area which organizations require to give a lot of emphasis. It is critical to undertake such measures as cutting overhead costs and having a variety of income sources to ensure that they stay afloat during recessions. Measures need to be put in place to enhance a speedy and sustainable recovery.
