Case Study for SWK5017

Your supervisee Maritsa is a licensed clinical social worker who has been with the agency for 5 years. She was born in the United States and is of Haitian descent. Maritsa specializes in working with children and is bilingual in Haitian Creole. Maritsa approached you to discuss her caseload, which she states is higher than other social workers at the agency due to an increasing number of Haitian Creole speaking clients. Maritsa also reports being stressed because she is going through a divorce. She has no one to assist with childcare for her two young children who are currently in an after-school program.

For the past three months, Maritsa has been providing therapy services to Claudette, a 15-year-old refugee from Haiti. In a session on Monday, Claudette shows Maritsa a welt on her arm. She states that her father uses a belt to discipline her when she does something wrong.

Maritsa knows that she needs to make a report to child protective services but decides to talk to Claudette’s mother first. The mother requests a Zoom appointment on Wednesday, because she is unable to leave work early to see Maritsa in the office.

The day of the scheduled appointment, the after-school program tells Maritsa to pick up her children immediately because one child is sick. The session with Claudette’s mother is scheduled at the same time. Because Maritsa has agreed to a Zoom appointment, she decides to Zoom in from her car on her personal cell phone.

On Friday, you receive a complaint from Claudette’s mother. She informs you that Maritsa conducted the session from her car and that her children were crying in the background. Claudette’s mother feels that Maritsa has violated confidentiality and disrespected the family.

When you approach Maritsa about the complaint, she admits that she conducted the session from her car after she picked up her children. She also tells you that she has not documented the session, and she forgot to make the report to child protective services.
