Cell City Project – You are the Designer!

Due Date: __June 11th 2021________________

Assignment:

Floating around in the cytoplasm of a cell are small structures called organelles. Like the organs in your own body, each one carries out a specific function necessary for the cell to survive. In order to survive, the cell must be able to interact with its surroundings, use energy, produce materials and manage waste.

You will create a 4page power point that compares a living plant cell or animal cell and its organelles to a city, school, factory, ballpark, space station etc. The place you choose must use energy, produce substances and manage waste. The organelles will represent the parts of your place that carry out these processes. Your ppt must include a creative title with the word “cell” somewhere in it. It must have the shape of a plant cell or animal cell. All of the parts of the “city” should be labeled with the cell part and the analogy you chose to represent it (put parentheses around the cell part). Your ppt must be colorful, neat and creative. Have fun designing your “cell city.” Be sure to include all of the organelles listed on the back of this sheet and the appropriate analogies.

Procedure:

_____Step 1: Select your analogy. (A cell is like a ______________)

_____Step 2: Complete the cell city analogy worksheet

_____Step 4: Create your ppt(4 Slides) *Slide 1 Title

*Slide 2 City

*Slide 3 The Legend

* Slide 4 (Organelle Analogy

This is a 200 point project.

Please complete the following to let me know you understand the requirements for this Cell City project.

Cell City:

Create a city model on the next sheet of paper. Your city must include the following locations AND their descriptions.

a. City limits - gives definite location to the city “Memphis” “Germantown” “Collierville”

b. City Hall- determines what happens within the city and gives directions for all work within the city

c. Factory - manufacture goods for the city and beyond

d. USPS/ FedEx- packages and ships out goods to be used within the city

e. Downtown- neighborhood surrounding City Hall. Location where many shops and businesses are located

f. I-240 (Highway system)- method of transporting goods and materials in and around the city

g. Blue-collar workers- employees who work to ensure the city continues to run smoothly. Can be find all over the city

h. CVS/Walgreens- location where medications, hormones and steroids are housed and distributed

i. Mayor- the most important person inside City Hall. Holds the details for city planning. Gives jobs to the blue collar workers.

j. Junkyard- location where all of all damaged and used items within the city go to get destroyed and broken down

k. MLGW- provides power and energy to be used throughout the city

l. Border patrol- creates a boundary for who and what can come in/out of the cell

m. Solar Panels- capture sunlight and convert into usable forms of energy

Creating a Legend

Identify which organelle matches each location in your city.

1. Fill in the correct organelle with its matching city location/job.
