(CDA3) - DUE SATURDAY (X2)
Summarize a political argument using Standard Form (Premise 1, Premise2, ...Conclusion). Edit your work to be succinct AND an accurate portrayal of the argument.
In this assignment, you do not need to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the argument. Instead, you need to paraphrase the argument and put it into the Standard Form structure. Please view the CDA video (lecture 00.4) prior to completing this assignment. It is helpful to first identify a conclusion and then work backwards to identify the reasons that the author uses to support the conclusion. Arguments can have one or more premises that lead logically to a conclusion. Premises are claims that can be proven to be true/false and conclusions are the argument in total that connects those claims. Include a link to or citation of the argument.
Here is an example of the assignment based on an opinion article ("We all need to be deepfake detectors — but especially social media platforms" by Jared Schroeder, The Hill, 1/29/20 ( https://thehill.com/opinion/technology/480536-we-all-need-to-be-deepfake-detectors-but-especially-social-media-platforms )
Premise 1. Deep fake videos (i.e., videos that present people saying/doing things they never did) mislead people with a more media-rich, visceral impact than just text.
Premise 2. Misleading the public threatens democracy because they act/vote/deliberate using incorrect information.
Premise 3. Laws prohibiting deep fakes are ineffective across state lines and likely violate First Amendment protections.
Premise 4. Industries have self-regulated successfully before by using industry-wide independent advisory boards such as the Motion Picture Association (which sets viewer discretion ratings, such as PG, R, etc.).
Conclusion. As consumers, users should demand that social media companies self-regulate by monitoring and blocking "deep fakes."
