Case 1 - Kara
Kara is a 32-year-old married female. She works in a demanding and high-stress environment at a large corporation. She has always had high expectations for herself and is critical of her own work. She struggles when she does not meet the performance standards she has created for herself, and this sometimes leaves her feeling ashamed and worthless.
Recently, Kara has been acting different at work, and has complained of being overly tired. She mentioned to her coworkers that she has had trouble falling asleep at night, and when she does fall asleep, she wakes up in the middle of the night and stays awake. She has seemed irritable and withdrawn, and this is out of the ordinary for her. Her boss has noticed an increase in the number of times Kara has called in sick, as well.
Kara has shown a decreased interest in sexual activity, and has seen this has affect her marriage. She confided in her husband that she is dissatisfied with her life and feels unfulfilled. She mentioned that she knows she has numerous reasons to be happy, but just is not happy, and this frustrates her. Kara remembered that her mother battled with depression in the past, and she wonders if that is what she is experiencing. Her husband recommended that she see a psychiatrist to talk through some of her feelings, and to see if medication would be an option for her.
Case 2 - John
John is a 30-year-old male who was involved in a deadly traffic accident 2 years ago that killed his girlfriend. John and his girlfriend were on their way to a friend’s birthday dinner when a drunk driver hit their car. The collision caused John’s car to roll over numerous times. John suffered many injuries that left him unable to move or help, and his girlfriend died in front of him.
John has battled the memories of that accident every day for the past 2 years. He has trouble sleeping due to nightmares about that night. Because of this, he has missed many days of work. He has been disciplined for excessive absences, and is in danger of losing his job. When he does manage to go to work, he appears withdrawn and does not interact with his coworkers. He is easily startled by others, and has been experiencing episodes of anxiety and flashbacks.
John used to be active, and was very social and outgoing. Since the accident, he stays home and does not interact with others unless it is absolutely necessary. John’s mother recently reached out to him because she was worried. She recommended that he see a psychiatrist to talk through the experiences, and to see if medication would be an option for him.
Case 3 - Jeremy
Jeremy is a 23-year-old married male with a 2-year-old son. He works as a call center representative for a large corporation. The corporation is very structured and has strict rules regarding call scripts and procedures for speaking with customers. The corporation experiences lay-offs often, and the individuals who do not follow the scripts and procedures exactly, according to the rules and guidelines, are the first people to be let go.
Jeremy is constantly worried about making sure he hits every point on the script, for fear that if he does not, he will lose his job. Jeremy is the sole provider for his family, and they rely on his income to make ends meet. The stress and worry about possibly losing his job has caused feelings of restlessness and fatigue. He often wakes up in the middle of the night with thoughts about work, and what he will do if he loses his job. He is overwhelmed with worry.
Jeremy’s wife has noticed these changes in him, and knows that other family members have experienced anxiety in the past. She recommended that he see a psychiatrist to discuss his anxious feelings, and to see if medication would be an option for him.
