Cross Cultural Essay Assignment In your essay, you will consider the role of religion in the fall of the Mexica Empire. You must craft a clear, concise, and original answer to one of the following three questions using the primary sources in Victors and Vanquished (ed. Schwartz/Seijas): Answer ONE of the following specific questions in an essay:

A. Bernal Díaz del Castillo, a conquistador who fought with Cortés and later wrote The True History of the Conquest of Mexico, famously explained the Spanish motives in Mesoamerica thus: “We went there to serve God, and also to get rich.” Were the Spanish conquistadors primarily motivated by religion? If so, what were they trying to change about the religion of Mesoamerica? If not, what was their primary motive? Concentrate on the writings of Bernal Díaz, but also consider primary texts that reveal indigenous perceptions of Spanish motives.

B. As the Spanish travelled throughout Mesoamerica, they erected crosses and statues of the Virgin Mary (whom they called “Our Lady”). Why did they do this? What role did Mary and the Cross play in the Spanish war against the Mexica? Identify three such instances of either the Cross or Mary being erected and describe and analyze these instances. Be sure to include a clear, overarching thesis regarding the role these two items played in the Spanish campaign.

C. What was the most important feature of Mesoamerican religion in the era of the Spanish war against the Mexica? To answer this question, consider which features of Mesoamerican religion show up most in the primary sources. Which features do the Spanish emphasize? Which features keep appearing in indigenous sources?

Source Requirements:

Primary Sources: Your essay must include cited references to at least three primary sources from the Schwartz collection Victors and Vanquished. Primary sources are those texts written during the period in question (1492-1570). Primary sources do NOT include the Schwartz/Seijas introduction

or footnotes. Secondary Sources: Your essay must include cited references to at least two of the secondary sources assigned in this course, i.e. Merriman’s A History of Modern Europe, Restall and Lane’s Latin America in Colonial Times; or the introductions in Schwartz/Seijas’s Victors and Vanquished. Secondary sources are histories written after (not during) the period in question.

STAGE 1 (Due Thursday, March 14 at 11:00am on CANVAS>Assignments)

Compose a draft of 2-3 pages describing which essay question you will answer and what further work you will do for the final draft. How will you be approaching your chosen question? What sources will you be using. You must describe the three primary sources and the two secondary sources you will be using and list them in a bibliography.

STAGE 2 (Due Thursday, April 11 at 11:00am on CANVAS)

Craft a sophisticated answer to your chosen essay question using the sources you described in your draft. Your final paper should be 7-8 pages in length. It will be graded on four major criteria:

1) Thesis and introduction 2) Evidence (sources and citations) 3) Organization and clarity 4) Grammar and style

A good paper must have:

1. A precisely and concisely explained original central thesis that answers the selected question cleverly and in a debatable fashion. 2. Evidence marshalled from three primary and two secondary sources which are properly cited in footnotes conforming to the Chicago Manual of Style. 3. A smooth flow from introduction, to body, to conclusion with no part of the essay wandering away from the central thesis. 4. Proper English grammar and spelling (refer to the Chicago Manual of Style for specifics) and proper formatting (Times New Roma, etc).

An excellent paper will include—in addition to the above four items—an insightful and imaginative thesis pursued in compelling and clever fashion, with impeccable grammar and formatting.
