Cause and Effect Essay
General Requirements for the assignment:
Essay format: 1 inch margins; 12 pt. Times New Roman font; 5 paragraphs; double spaced; appropriate paraphrasing, quoting, and citations!
Your essay should include:
1. One intro paragraph with a hook and a thesis statement ( the thesis statement must be the last sentence of this paragraph)
2. Three body paragraphs with three topic sentences (each topic sentence should have ONE controlling idea and reflect the thesis statement).
3. One conclusion paragraph
4. One simile or metaphor in the paper (that you created)
5. Coherence, Support, Unity, and Formality (no ‘you’, ‘I’, or ‘we’)
6. Relevant examples in each body paragraph
7. You must use or correctly cite 2 sources that are academic and credible. You must cite them correctly - both in text and in the references. They CANNOT be from the internet (unless they are from the library's article database. EBSCO is a good place to start).
8. Each body paragraph must have at least 2 examples. Each body paragraph must have two citations.
9. You may only use one quote in your paper. All other information from your sources must be paraphrased.
10. Your paper must have a separate page at the end listing your references.
11. You must use ten words from the AWL, 7 from Unit 5, and 3 from either Unit 3 or 4.
Overview of Essay
PART I: Select a Topic and a Method
2. What are the causes for a recent social condition or change (for example, a change in men’s or women’s roles, divorce rates, family size, amount of stress in children).
3. Discuss the effects of a political or social change in your country.
Part II: Prewriting
0. Use two of the prewriting techniques we discussed in class to develop ideas regarding the topic you have chosen.
0. Demonstrate that you have used at least two prewriting techniques. If you use Wh- Questions, you should write the answers to the questions as well as the questions themselves. Be as complete as possible; you should collect enough ideas that you can use the prewriting directly to write your essay. The prewriting notes do not have to be typed, but if they are handwritten, please make them legible and you can scan and save as pdf or jpg. document when you submit them via Canvas.
