Case Write Up

Use the following structure for your report write-up.

State the Conclusion First

 State the decision to be taken in one sentence (e.g., I recommend that we/they do A.)

 Briefly state the critical few reasons that will be supported with data (e.g., …the decision should be taken because a, b, and c...)

Make the Case  Present the full set of decision options that were considered

 List decision criteria for evaluating options and define how each is measured

 Apply the decision criteria to the recommended option and support each with evidence

 Apply the decision criteria to the rejected options and support each with evidence

 State any disadvantages of choosing the recommended option

Action Plan  State what should be done in the short, medium, and long- term

 List any potential risks and appropriate responses in the future given the statement

Suggestions for How to Read the Case

Study the Situation

 Identify the decision options.  Evaluate strength of options.  Identify what’s at stake - risk.  List decision criteria including any explicitly discussed in the case.  Identify the most important criteria.

Develop Hypotheses

 Select the strongest decision criteria and apply them to the options

 Identify strengths and weaknesses of criteria for each option  Investigate the strongest option based on your confidence in it  Consider the option from the viewpoint of various constituents  Consider the protagonist’s position in making the decision

Proof and Action

 Gather evidence about your hypothesis from throughout the case.

 Assess your hypothesis using the evidence, quantitative wherever possible.

 Identify actions that may be called for given your analysis.  Create a clear statement of action to address the situation –

state what will be done and when.

Evaluate Alternatives

 Identify the biggest downside to the option you recommend.  State how you would address the downside outcomes.  Identify the strongest evidence against the option.  Find support and make a case for the major alternative option.
