Group Case Study:

A former wealthy athlete had a car accident requiring several surgeries. After recovering she donates $50 million for the construction of a new physical rehabilitation center at the hospital where she recovered.

The building design and energy efficient infrastructure has been heralded as revolutionary. “Architectural Digest Plus” magazine states it is the design of the new century with amazing attention to detail down to the interior color theme by a Milan fashion designer. Naturally, the facility has the finest state of the art equipment.

The building is finished. A press conference is organized for the grand opening. Dignitaries include the governor, a senator, city officials, celebrities, faith leaders, contractor, former patients and the donor. There are TV, radio, and print reporters, including some from Sports Illustrated and fitness magazines in addition to 100 plus in attendance.

Official remarks have ended and the moment to cut the ribbon has arrived. This will be done by a former veteran and current Paralympian medalist in wheelchair basketball. He proceeds to the ramp where the ribbon is over the entrance of the new building. Approximately 12 feet into the ramp his wheelchair becomes stuck. He can’t move forward or back because the ramp is too narrow.  It takes several minutes for a few individuals to free him and carry him to the entrance. Afterwards, he must be carried back down.
