Case Study

Example Presentation

Introduction:

The ALB belongs to the coleoptera order

Large black abdomen with white spots

Antennae go from top of head down past the length of the body

Tends to only be visible during summer months in certain areas of the country

Females are shorter and have much shorter antennae

Example Presentation

Significance:

Extremely dangerous to many different types of trees

Dig into trees and create pencil width holes all over

NY is threatened by them because of the maple trees being attacked

Females try to lay eggs in tree and can kill off a large hardwood tree in a decade

Example Presentation

Research and Future Studies:

ALB came over on ships through the wood

Wood needs to be chemically treated in order to end this infestation

Identify areas of infestation and kill off trees before they spread

If spotted in tree, send picture to DEC Forest Health
