Case study 3

Anvil Industry makes paper clips 24 hours a day. Listed below is the output in thousands. (That is, in Hour 1, they made 320,000 clips, although only 320 is shown on the table. The extra zeros are dropped because they are confusing.) Anvil Industry operates on a JIT (Just In Time) system and they receive the coils of wire from their vendor six times each day. There are three shifts, eight hours each, for the machine operators.

Management plans for an average of 400,000 clips an hour. If they make less than 320,000 per hour, they are not doing well where as if they make more than 490,000 per hour they are probably running the machines too hard and might be making bad product.

You have just been hired as a quality manager. Your boss gives you the data from the previous day’s production (in thousands) and tells you that things are going fine because this data shows that they are exactly on target.

ASSIGNMENT: Write a brief report, analyzing this production information. Submit ONE file with your analysis. You can use either Excel or MS Word for your report. Feel free to clipboard copy this data into Excel. Submit your file by emailing it as an attachment to the instructor. Refer to the Blackboard site for details on sending email.

Questions you should address in your analysis: Is your boss right? Is there something else going on? Feel free to speculate on any aspect of what you see. (Hint: You might want to start with figuring the average hourly production rate for the day,)
