1. What is your opinion of the manager’s approach? How does it compare with the Deming philosophy?
The manager's approach in this case appears very traditional and conservative. He had to change his mind if he really wanted to improve the package delivery system. Since the system is manual, errors are bound to occur. Humans are not robots, so managers need to understand this practical situation. Rather than issuing disciplinary quotes, managers must understand the root causes of problems and develop a complete system so that there are no failures in package delivery.
If we have to compare it to Deming's philosophy, it is completely at odds with the holistic work culture that is promoted by Deming. In his philosophy, Deming rightly recommends that you understand the purpose of examinations, eliminate fear, and build confidence in the work environment to promote a healthy work culture. In your TQM leadership concept, mention that employees always expect managers to give honest feedback about their performance and provide debugging training.
Unlike Deming’s philosophy provisions, the manager’s approach in this case is conservative and lacks the commandments that Deming formulated. Deming’s points are the primary management practices which many companies have accepted especially in the US and in Japan. The common aim of Deming’s methods is build customer awareness, reduce variations, and to ensure consistent improvement in the entire organization (Fellers, 2011). For example, the points that Deming pointe out are meant to create consistency of purpose aimed at improving product and service. The ultimate goal for this action is improve the organization’s competitiveness and sustainability. The concept starts and ends with the customer’s evaluation to understand what they need and whether the company is able to provide them or change from their current provisions to suit the customer’s needs. Deming provides that consistency enables the company to meet both long and short term goals. Also, unlike the traditional approaches that this manger’s approach has, Deming emphasized on the adoption of new technology since the economic era is new. Hence, the western executives need to be challenged by the situation learn to adhere to their responsibilities and assume leadership roles for change. Deming suggests that customers should receive what they rightfully desire. Therefore, the business should be keen in resolving issues and avoid tolerating mistakes, defects or poor service (Campbell, 2014).
However, the two managerial approaches match in various ways. For instance, both Deming’s philosophy and this managerial approaches are based on improving constantly on system’s production quality and service provisions. Deming provides ensuring organizational organization’s improvement is key in upholding sustainability which is also evident in the approach used in this case. The two confirms that organizations should focus on improving the processes as well as reducing the costs of their products and services. Secondly, both Deming’s philosophy and the approach used in this case introduce up-to-date ways of training on the work. From the two means, the organization should train their employees in order to increase the quality of the production and motivate their workers showing them that the organization values their work to the organization. Also, the two approaches evidence the introduction of current methods of leadership. Deming provides that if an organization is well establish with current expertise, the organization will develop faster and their leadership will lead and motivate workers to work together.
2) How might the analysis of these data help the manager to understand the variation in the system? (Plot the data to obtain some insight.) How can the data help the manager to improve the performance of this system?
1. The schedule and distribution of the process showing where it is implemented. That is, above average or below average. Second, the distribution also shows the proportion of errors.
2. The spread of errors indicates the error rate and corrective action can be suggested.
3. To improve the process, each fault can be applied to the control circuit and the process capability can be determined.
4. As you divide errors and write them on the control chart, a clear picture of the types of errors that are repeated and corrective action is needed to reduce the errors.
