case study
Arriving at the correct diagnosis is not the key in these assignments (in fact, you may hear diagnostic labels thrown around as you listen to each case); rather, the process of thinking through each case is what this assignment is all about. To that
end, be thorough in your analysis of each case.
Case Study #1: Listen to episode three of “The Hilarious World of Depression” podcast:
Analyze each case in a 3-6page paper. You do not need a cover page or references, and strict adherence to APA style is not necessary. You can also use first person language as needed. Your paper that addresses the following topics (these topics should be section headers in your paper):
1. Relevant symptoms (What psychological, emotional, social, or
biological/physiological symptoms do you observe while listening to the case? Note: In this section, try to link symptoms to DSM-5 disorder criteria. Make sure to be specific; for example, “anxiety”
or “feeling anxious” are not symptoms, but feeling on edge, worrying, shaking, etc. might be. Discuss how the symptoms appear to meet, or not, DSM-5 specifications. Also, discuss any relevant cultural considerations/issues/stressors/strengths that could be
impacting this case.)
1. Diagnostic impression (Based on the symptoms described, offer a DSM-5 diagnosis (you can offer more than 1), includingDSM-5 code numbers, relevant subtypes and/or specifiers, &page numbers in DSM-5. Justify your diagnoses based on DSM-5 criteria.)
1. Differential diagnosis (What are potential diagnoses for this client that you can rule out based on what you observed? What are potential diagnoses for this client that you cannot yet rule out, but would need to rule out if you continued working with this client?)
1. Treatment recommendations (What type of intervention or treatment would you implement with the client? If you were working with this client, what would be your treatment goals be? Are there any counseling theories you might draw from to help this client? Why?
1. Personal reactions (What are your personal reactions to this case? What was it like for you to try to diagnose this case? What was easy for you and what was more of a struggle with this case study? Moving forward, what can you do to get stronger with diagnosis?)
Papers should be typed, double -spaced, with 12-pt font and 1-inch margins, and should conform to APA (American Psychological Association) Style, 6thEdition. Proper
spelling, grammar, and punctuation are expected. Late papers/assignments will
not be accepted without prior approval, and must be due to a legitimate emergency (not computer problems).
