  • Should be a condensed version
  • Pick out the highlights
  • There should be enough to tell the story of the organization to an outsider.

Industry Analysis

  • Use Porter’s Five-Force Model to analyze the industry.
  • Risk of entry of potential competitors
  • Rivalry among established companies
  • Bargaining power of buyers
  • Bargaining power of suppliers
  • Threat of substitute products

Corporate Level Strategy

  • What business(s) is the organization in?
  • Think of the organization in terms of a multi-location corporation.
  • What strategies are in place that apply to all locations?

Business Level Strategy

  • What strategies does the business use to actually DO business?
  • Three big ones to consider are cost leadership, differentiation, and focus.

Structure and Control

  • Structure has to do with jobs and how they are divided.
  • Departmentalization
  • Authority
  • Controls are ways to check on effectiveness.
  • Reward systems
  • Budgets

Internal Environment Analysis

  • Make lists of the strengths and weaknesses of the organization itself
  • Remember to stick to “what the organization is doing currently,” NOT what it should do.

External Environment Analysis

  • Make lists of the opportunities for the organization as well as the threats
  • Opportunities and threats come from the external environment
  • Examine each section of the environment – Economic, Technological, Political/legal, Sociocultural, Global, and the Physical environment.

Recommendations and Evaluation

  • Think of yourself as a paid management consultant
  • These are the most valid recommendations taken from your opportunities section.
  • Explain the pros and cons to your recommendations.
