reading book then apply to the concepts - 7 pages
Overview
As a story, a case provides rich description of realistic organizational settings. For students, case studies provide data for analysis and discussion. For this assignment, we will use the case of an interesting career in an interesting firm. As you read your book, you will no doubt recognize elements of the story related to concepts e.g.,, personal branding, power, leadership, organizational sense making, financial valuation, emotional intelligence, organizations as systems, structure, and organizational change). In the paper, you will write your own narrative of important events in the case. In addition to using course concepts to explain elements of the case, it’s perfectly appropriate to engage in critical thinking about existing theory. For example, you might consider how your case invites greater nuance, clarification, or even defies the wisdom of current theory.

Structure of the Paper
The structure of this paper will not be constrained to the typical sections in an APA research paper: introduction, literature review, method, results, and discussion. Instead, you will simply have an introduction, body, and conclusion. The introduction should be brief (approximately ½ page to 1 page) where you introduce the main topics that will be discussed. As with any introduction, the introduction should create curiosity, justify the importance of the topic, and give a clear sense of what will be covered in the body of the paper. There is flexibility in how you structure the body of the paper, but the body of the paper should be clearly structured. There should be a clear sense of main topics and sub topics that fit the content of your analysis. The conclusion should provide a sense of closure and give a sense of new areas for research. To do so, there should be a summary of key takeaways and how they could be applied outside the case. There should also be academic reflection. Were there events in the case that could not be explained well by existing theory? What new questions should be explored in the future to refine existing theory?

Clear application of course concepts to the Steve Jobs text. Rather than simply a collection of examples and course concepts, the paper represents a synthesis of analysis of one or a few major topic areas. Overall, the paper captures the experience of your person of interest (Mayer, Gerstner, or Amoruso) through the lens of major sections of CMGT 501. Critical thinking of existing theory is encouraged. |
