Effective Communication Techniques of the Case Manager
The job of the case manager is to visit the residential community centers and check the environment, health and safety of chronically mentally ill adults and older adults, who have psychotic disorders, depression, and the anxiety, and stay as permanent residents at these small home-like community centers.
A case manager usually carries a caseload of 20 to 30 people at the given times, and it requires a lot of traveling and consumes time since each community center is to be visited by the case manager. If budget allows, the case manager can stay at one position for the longest time, otherwise, he may be transferred to some other place (John F. Fitzgerald, 1994).
The people who are mentally ill, but still at the lower level of their depression and anxiety, and can visit the center all alone, without any person's help for getting an appointment, are the primary clients of the case manager. Their personal social, housing or financial issues made them depressed and mentally ill and compelled them to visit the community center. At first, this is the biggest sign, that they realize their health condition, and furthermore, they are conscious about their health and want to be healthy and join society once again.
The case manager does not only being a part of rehabilitating the mentally ill or depressed people of the society, but they cover all people who are suffering from any such illness whether they are living independently or in the prisons, regardless of their age groups. The government chose those individuals who are suffering from any such mental illness that needs to be treated medically or required a specific rehabilitation but are leading their life in the imprisonment. This specific group of individuals is called correctional populations, or the people who need to be corrected by rehabilitation practices so that t--*9/-*9-*2-hey can be a responsible citizen, once they are freed. The total correctional population consists of all prisoners, who are under the supervision of the correctional or rehabilitation centers who are on parole or in the custody of state prisons or local jails (John F. Fitzgerald, 1994).
The case manager is the first person, who meets these individuals and after the necessary interview, assign further treatment or rehabilitation.
The assessment procedure is the most important phase of a case manager’s job profile. He/she has to interview the prisoners in a relatively different way. In fact, a prisoner is not a prisoner before a case manager, rather he/ she is a client and a case manager has to deal in a polite way like a doctor speaks with the patient. But, it is also imperative to know that they have to deal a specific person who belongs to correctional population, thus the case managers take the utmost care and concern while designing the interview questionnaire for their client. The interview questionnaire is the basic diagnostic tool that extracts out all the social, demographic, medical, and family history of their client. A case manager does not confine to specific customary questions, but, he/ she asks all the relevant question that might help in building a reliable, authentic and suggestive record of the client, so he/she can be treated accordingly (Kaeble, 2014).
A case manager tries to build a relationship with the client so that he/ she can be able to gain the trust and confidence of the client and get the maximum information. Based on the given information, a case manager write the report that is required to be followed for further phases of the rehabilitation process. Determining the ailment of---* the client, a case manager has to understand the psychology of the client. In treating the psychology, the main concern is the correct diagnosis. Correct diagnosis is depending on a person's behavior and reaction to things and the answers to the questions which his psychologist asks. It is not easy to diagnose someone with a psychological ailment, only the registered psychologist can discover the type of patient, however, a case manager is the first person, who may refer the client to a psychologist for further treatment. The case manager has to focus the Caseload, which often includes the basic data of the client like age, marital status, educational or employment history, family and criminal history, medical and genetic disorder history and look inside every aspect of the client’s life. The gathering of maximum information is the primary motive of a case manager, and to motivate the client to become self-sufficient once enter the society, when completes the imprisonment or feel a better and healthy person mentally and physically (Conklin, Lincoln, & Flanigan, 1998).
The psychology, a typical myth that needs special care and concern, but, needs to be treated with specific tools. These specific tools are neither medicine nor surgery, but a series of actions that are required to treat this kind of ailment.
A case manager should use some specific tools in the form of a questionnaire that establishes his/ her client’s psychological condition and depending on the condition the case manager should prescribe different treatment plans or rehabilitation options. These specific tools are designed to measure cognitive process, attitude/ belief, personality trait, and mental condition. Depending on different cycles of treatment, the first representation includes AAMD adaptive behavior scale or adult neuropsychological questionnaire. Here is an excerpt of a questionnaire that should specifically be asked by the case manager while probing the psychological condition of his / her client.

These kinds of questions probe the client with a detailed vision that ultimately suggests the condition of the client.
However, it is also important to notice that there are various types of clients. Some are having minor anxiety or depression, but some have major depression. Both types of patients are dealt with deferent treatment plans depending on the condition.
