Review: Casablanca Movie

​When wars take place, they end up displacing people from their areas (Kaldor, 2013). Some flee after their houses have been destroyed while others flee in fear of being attacked or killed in the war. This is what took place in the early years when World War II was occurring in 1941. As it can even be seen in the movie, "Casablanca," when World War II erupted, people started to migrate from Europe. Also, they were attracted to the coastal city of Morocco (Casablanca ( 1942) Ingrid Bergman). (Wars bring about a lot of instability and displace people from their nations to others who have not been affected, and in that same way create new friendships as people from different areas interact).

​As the movie reaches the end, Rick, Isla, and Laszlo are seen having a conversation before Renault interrupts them as he enters the room. When he goes in, he blurts out that Laszlo is under arrest for the charges of being linked to the murder of people, whom the letters he was holding onto were stolen from. Rick, as he prevents his arrest, withdraws a pistol and says, ["nobody gets arrested, not for a while…" 1hr34 min]. He then proceeds to force him to schedule a plane for Lazlo and Isla to get out of Casablanca. (Afterwards, he then goes ahead to convince Isla to get into the plane and fly away because she belonged to Victor Lorenzo and if not, she would regret it for the rest of her life, 1hr 37 min). The movie ends with Rick shooting Strasser and Renault covering him up. As the movie ends, they disappear into the fog with Rick saying, "Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship" (\ ( 1942) Ingrid Bergman).

(The ending of the movie interested me). It was such a thriller and had a lot of instances that stand against my expectations. I did not expect Rick to have double-crossed Renault after he helped him get Lazlo out of jail. Rick points his gun at Renault before forcing him to make a call and schedule a flight for Isla and Victor. He makes this action against his will, fearing to lose his life. He was then followed by Rick convincing Isla to leave with Laszlo. It was unexpected and unusual as it would have expected that Isla remains with Rick. Another exciting scene as the movie ends is seeing Renault cover-up for Rick after he murders Strasser. The usual expectation was for Renault to have Rick convicted, and the plane stopped to bring back Laszlo. Instead, he protects them both, and from here, they become friends. Rick gives thanks to Renault for helping him even though it is known amongst them that Rick was using his gun to force Renault to do favors for him. The only part where I did not like as much in the movie was when Isla started crying when being asked by Rick to flee Casablanca with Laszlo. Given that they were very close and Laszlo seemed somehow irresponsible, Rick should have joined them in the plan just for the sake of Isla.

(In conclusion, people are brought together by things which happen to take place in their lives). In the movie, there are a lot of instances when people forced to join hands due to the individual circumstances in which they find themselves. For example, when Renault joins with Rick, they create a new friendship after Laszlo leaves and after Strasser dies. Lastly, the main reason why they are in Casablanca is because of the world war which displaced them from their nations.
