Career Development Project

Objective: The Objective of the Career Development Project is to begin the process of developing a rolling five year Career Development Plan (CDP). Your CDP should be updated at least annually, or after a major Career/Life event such as landing a new job or hitting the lottery. Below I have described major sections of the CDP with the type of information you should be considering for entry in the sections below.

DUE DATE: No time like the present! Your CDP is to be submitted to by 11:59PM on 11/22/2019

Points: This project is worth 10 points. If you do not turn this a CDP into me, you will not receive 10 points. Worse yet, I will wonder if you are serious about your career.

Objective Mission Statement: What do you want to do with your life? How will your career help you realize your dreams? What profession would you like to work in? It is ok to talk about money here.

Education: In this section of your CDP describe how your education will help you enter into your career and chosen profession. In this section of your CDP you should indicate the level of education your plan to obtain. Associates Degree?....Bachelor’s? Master’s?, Doctorate? What area to you plan to major?... Accounting? (My favorite) Finance? , Human Resources? Note that you do not have to have the same major for each area. For example, you may decide that you are going to earn your Bachelor’s in Business Administration (Accounting Concentration), and then obtain a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the Goldman School of Public Administration at UC Berkeley.

Experience: What area of your field do you plan to practice in? Accounting, Tax, Finance, Marketing, Human Resources, Politics? What industry to do you think you would like to work in? For example, if you are thinking about Accounting as your field, will you practice public accounting, corporate accounting? Do you plan to be self-employed by owning your own business? What experiences will help you to someday be self-employed?

Professional Certification: What professional certification/licenses will help you to demonstrate competence in your chosen field? For example, if you are going to become a human resources professional, would you acquire certification from the Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM)? If you are entering into the Accounting field, would you acquire a Certified Public Accountant (CPA license)? What are the requirements for these professional certifications and how will your education and experience help you to meet these requirements.

Professional Associations: What professional associations will help you accomplish your objectives? For example, can you join SHRM as a student? If you plan to become a CPA do organizations like CalCPA have student chapters? In this section you should be describing how your professional associations fit into your Objective Mission Statement. For example, if community service is important to you, you may think about joining a community based organization like the Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA), or Ascend (Pan-Asian Leaders), or the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA). If you plan to own your own business could these entities be helpful with practice development?

Ethical Behavior: What sort of ethics are expected of your chosen profession? If you are planning to become Senator Corleone someday, should you post pictures on Facebook that display private moments of personal indiscretion? What activities such as community service might help you to demonstrate your passion and your ethics?
