BSPH Capstone Project Guide

This guide provides an overview of the Capstone Project milestones and the Capstone Project Presentation requirements. The Capstone Project is your opportunity to demonstrate mastery of your Program of Study Learning Outcomes. The Capstone Project consists of weekly milestones that challenge you to synthesize ideas presented in all your previous courses. Each of these milestones contributes to your Literature Review and Capstone Project Presentation.

The table below provides an overview of the Capstone Project milestones and due dates. The full details for each milestone are located in the weekly Capstone Project area of your online classroom. You are strongly encouraged to plan ahead for the completion of each of your milestones, particularly your Capstone Project Presentation in Week 5. Below the table, you will find the requirements for your Capstone Project Presentation.

BS in Public Health Program—Outline for Capstone Project Presentation (25 slides)

Slide 1 (Title Slide): Capstone Project PUBH 4900; name; date; term

Slide 2 (Learning Outcome 1): Explain how your chosen health topic impacts public health and public health systems.

Slides 3–4 (Learning Outcomes 4 & 5): Provide morbidity and mortality statistics as well as other epidemiological data that describe the impact of your health issue among various populations. Which groups are most impacted?

Slides 5–8 (Learning Outcomes 5 & 6): Use current, credible, and scholarly literature to describe and analyze social, cultural, and behavioral factors that influence your select health issue.

Slides 9–11 (Learning Outcomes 5 & 3): Use current, credible, and scholarly literature to analyze political, economic, and environmental factors that influence your health topic.

Slides 12–14 (Learning Outcomes 2, 7 & 5): How does health program planning and evaluation impact your public health issue? Describe 2–3 existing public health prevention programs or services related to your health issue. Have these programs or services been evaluated? How so? Are they effective or ineffective? Justify your response with support from current scholarly literature.

Note: If you cannot find any evidence of existing programs or services related to your topic in the scholarly literature, propose a health program that could be developed to address this health issue. Provide a title, a possible mission statement, and 2–3 program goals. Describe 2–3 “essential ingredients” for developing an effective, evidence-based public health program that addresses your select health issue.

Slides 15–16 (Learning Outcome 8 & 5): Describe ways in which technology may impact your select health issue. Use the current literature to provide 2–3 examples of how technology has been used in the past, is being used currently, or could be used in the future to improve prevention efforts, surveillance, or treatment associated with your health topic.

Slides 17–18: (Learning Outcomes 5 & 9): Describe 23 legal and ethical issues related to your selected health topic and how these issues impact public health practice.

Slides 19–20 (Learning Outcome 10): How do public health policy and health advocacy impact your selected health topic? Describe past, present, and/or future policies and/or advocacy campaigns associated with your health issue, and explain which individuals or groups may have been (or will be) most influential in advocating for, developing, or implementing these policy and/or advocacy efforts.

Slides 21–22 (Learning Outcome 11 and Walden’s mission): How can you, as a scholar-practitioner, play a role in addressing this health issue? How can you influence social change as it pertains to this problem?
