Name:

Stephanie Johnson

Date:

Overview: Capstone Reflective Journal

Each module you will make an entry into your Journal. You are asked to reflect on 3 of the key points for each module. Each entry should reflect on your understanding of the topic, your experiences and observations in your work environment or general nursing environment regarding the module topic.

This is a cumulative document. You will save it to your own computer desktop or memory device and update it each week. You may choose to record more than one entry each week, especially if you have an “aha!” moment as a result of your reading, discussions, or experience. You will upload and submit the latest version of your Capstone Reflective Journal to Blackboard by 2359 the Saturday following each of the first six modules of this course. It is not necessary that your entries be formatted or written in any particular way because it is for your benefit . Your entries will only be reviewed to ensure that you are making sufficient progress and thinking deeply about the requirements in the course.

Rubrics

Use this rubric to guide your Journal entries.

There will be total of 6 Journal entries for Modules 1-6. Each Module you are expected to address 3 key points from the Module content, discuss how each point applies to your practice as a nurse, and, finally, how will your practice change in the future because of this information.

In Module 7 your Journal entries will be used as you write the last paper for the program, the Synthesis Paper.

Instructions

Each week, record your experiences, connections to your course goals, and reflections as they relate to the given prompts and/or your course project. You must record one entry each week, but may record more (insert rows as needed). You may find it helpful and rewarding to record one entry at the beginning of the week, think about the prompt during the week, then record another at the end of the week. For privacy, refer to patients, online colleagues, and/or co-workers with initials instead of names.

Save this document to your own computer desktop or storage device after each entry to create a cumulative journal. You will upload the document and submit it each week by 2359 Saturday night. No Reflective Journal entry is made on Module 7.

Remember that the more thoughtfully and intentionally you record your immediate reflections, the easier it will be for you to pull all your experiences and thoughts together for your Synthesis Paper in Module 7.

Module Journal Entries

A separate Journal entry is required for Modules 1-6 by 2359 Saturday of each indicated module. Provide details of your thinking, including insights, challenges, paradigm shifts, and goals. Identify previous course topics, readings, or research that relate to the prompt.

Journal Entry

Module 1: Identify 3 key points form this module. Reflect on how why each point is important, how it impacts on your work experience or nursing practice, and how will you change your practice in the future based on each key area.

Key Point 1

Learning styles are important because they provide insight that helps improve a person’s knowledge base. Knowing my learning style, I can better explain to my trainers which styles help me the most. I will change my practice in the future to ensure that all training coincides with my learning style.

Key Point 2

Nurses should pick a particular area of interest when conducting research. This is important because it helps to guide the nursing research. I will change my practice in the future to provide helpful insight regarding particular areas of interest that I have previously studied.

Key Point 3

It is important for nurses to be aware of their strengths and challenges. Knowing these things help people identify ways to maximize their strengths and overcome their challenges. I will change my practice in the future to work to improve my skills on things that are challenging.

Module 2: Identify 3 key points form this module. Reflect on how why each point is important, how it impacts on your work experience or nursing practice, and how will you change your practice in the future based on each key area.

Key Point 1

SMART goals are necessary to focus research and complete a project. By using SMART goals, I know exactly what type of information to look for and how to reach my overall goal. I will change my practice in the future to ensure that my patient care plans have SMART goals.

Key Point 2

Finding relevant research articles is needed to support points made in a research project. I know that people will not take my words as the truth without having support. I will change my nursing practice to include evidence when I am making claims to patients.

Key Point 3

Reducing the challenges that entry level nurses face is important to prevent nursing burnout. If a nurse faces too many challenges early on without proper support, they are more likely to leave the field prematurely. I will change my practice in the future to always give support and guidance to nurses in training.

Module 3: Identify 3 key points form this module. Reflect on how why each point is important, how it impacts on your work experience or nursing practice, and how will you change your practice in the future based on each key area.

Key Point 1

It is important to create measurable outcomes for your capstone project because they focus your research. Knowing these outcomes can also help in my nursing practice because I know specific ways to provide care. In the future, I will ensure that any goals I put into place have measurable outcomes.

Key Point 2

An organized presentation is needed to help facilitate a clear understanding of new information. In my work experience, I can use this organization to provide detailed patient care plans that are written in a manner that is clear to the patient. Moving forward, I will ensure that any nursing plans I create are well organized and easily understandable.

Key Point 3

The nursing shortage is a significant issue because not having enough nurses presents a safety issue for patients. Additionally, it leaves nurses stresses and more likely to experience burnout. I will change my nursing practice to pay attention to signs of burnout in myself and my fellow nurses. I will change my practice in the future to ensure that I do not put patient safety at risk if I am work on a shift that is short the recommended number of nurses.

Module 4: Identify 3 key points form this module. Reflect on how why each point is important, how it impacts on your work experience or nursing practice, and how will you change your practice in the future based on each key area.

Key Point 1

Having a well-written resume that is accurate and uses correct grammar is necessary before submitting to potential employers. One simple spelling or grammar error can result in the immediate rejection of a resume. This is important because it can prevent a person from growing their career. I will change my practice in the future to ensure that my resume is always edited.

Key Point 2

Adding trigger words to your resume can help to highlight your skills. It is important for a resume to explain what you have done, not just the titles you have held. As you are trying to advance your nursing career, potential employers need to know how you fit into the prospective role. In the future, I will be sure that my resume highlights my skills and assets to an organization.

Key Point 3

It is also important in nursing to have professional references that can attest to your skills. This is important because potential employers like to speak to someone that knows your skills. Moving forward, I will be sure to seek professional references on a regular basis.

Module 5: Identify 3 key points form this module. Reflect on how why each point is important, how it impacts on your work experience or nursing practice, and how will you change your practice in the future based on each key area.

Key Point 1

It is important to be prepared for a presentation because you will be more prepared to present your information. Being prepared affects my nursing practice because I know that preparing leads to greater success. Moving forward, I will practice any presentations on my own before sharing them with others.

Key Point 2

Timing is an important concept in nursing. In my nursing practice, managing my time effectively ensures that I have time to meet the needs of my patients. Moving forward, I will work to plan my time accordingly.

Key Point 3

Knowing how to create a PPT is an important skill. In my nursing practice, I might need unique ways to share information and a PPT is a great way. Moving forward, I will look into classes that increase my knowledge of creating presentations.

Module 6: Identify 3 key points form this module. Reflect on how why each point is important, how it impacts on your work experience or nursing practice, and how will you change your practice in the future based on each key area.

Key Point 1

It is important to regularly evaluate your personal nursing philosophy because personal interests change. I will change my nursing practice to align it with my goals. Moving forward, I will always adjust my practice to ensure that it aligns with my overall career goals.

Key Point 2

Lifelong learning is part of being a nurse because healthcare is not a stagnant field. I will change my nursing practice to always ensure that I am up to date on current best practices. Moving forward, I will also look for opportunities to engage in additional training.

Key Point 3

I feel it is important for a nurse to be committed to service. I will always model my practice around that thought and work to service my patients to the best of my ability. Moving forward, if I am ever lacking in service areas, I will work to improve them to ensure my patients always receive safe and quality care.
