Title of Your Paper (Topic Introduction) Comment by DoD_Admin: Topic Introduction – Revised from Draft #1 (if directed to make changes)
Identify a current critical issue you are interested in professionally. The topic should warrant the application of SMC learning objectives, providing appropriate context for your writing. Identify at least three (3) published sources that support the relevance, timeliness, and significance of the topic in the initial submission. In other words, identify the topic you have selected and why it is important. (This should be 28-34 double-spaced lines to fill one page. The last sentence should be your thesis statement.)
Statement of the Problem (Problem Statement) Comment by DoD_Admin: Revised from Draft #1 (if directed to make changes)
The problem statement is an issue or problem within a broad topic area that you believe is important. (This should be ½ page or 14-16 double-spaced lines.)
Example of a Problem Statement (DO NOT PLAGARIZE)
There is a tremendous need for true command and control over public affairs professionals’ leader development and professional development. According to DA G1, active component public affairs professionals receive more training quotas than the reserve components. United States Army Reserve Command G1 identified that the Army Reserve comprises of __% public affairs professionals. The active component comprises at least __% of public affairs professionals. According to ATRRS, active component public affairs professionals receive 24 training quotas for ALC, whereas reserve components receive at least eight training quotas for ALC the entire fiscal year. However, the other sister services have a balanced training quota system. Therefore, differences of knowledge, skills, and abilities between services creates a capability gap between service components.
Research Question(s) and Strategy:
Provide at least one guiding question (1–3 required) and discuss the resources you will use to examine the issue (strategy). A guiding question (or research question) describes the purpose of your essay. The question(s) is/are strongly tied to the broad topic and the issue you have identified in the problem statement. After this section, you have a literature review that addresses the topic and problem. You will reference current, published, scholarly materials (e.g., doctrine, peer-reviewed articles, journal articles, books.) to explain what is known about the issue. Provide an overview of the strategies you will use to identify relevant and current resources related to the topic. Identify at least two strategies you will employ to locate resources.
Literature Review
Conduct a literature review of 6 or more scholarly or doctrinal resources related to the topic and problem you have established for your capstone project. The literature review should discuss the related literature, and organized by topic or themes (not a list of sources). A literature review includes synthesis, analysis, and critique of scholarly articles, textbooks, doctrinal manuals, or other sources. For more information, read Chapters 5 and 6 of Succeeding with Your Literature Review: A Handbook for Students by Dr. Paul Oliver.
Example of Literature Review (DO NOT PLAGARIZE)
Literature Review: Nationalism and the Decline of Globalism
This literature review will analyze the issues and problems associated with the rising ideals of nationalism. This review will find gaps associated with nationalism and globalism by exploring their effects they play on one another and their environments. Furthermore, the review will highlight how nationalism is affecting globalization considering that today’s world connection is global while populations focus internal. This literature review will present no conclusion, ethical, diversity findings or way ahead but point out gaps and themes on the topic of discussion showing the relevance that nationalism is a threat to globalism.
Immigration
There are various approaches, governmental policies, and personal beliefs on how to approach the topic of immigration. Immigration comes in two controversial forms the first being illegal migration into another sovereign nation the other through refugees seeking asylum (Brandys Laurent & Knox, 2018). The United States (US) is currently on the forefront of dealing with both sides of the coin as migrants from areas Central America flee places like Venisayla passing through Mexico in attempts to seek asylum (Brandys Laurent & Knox, 2018). Some Americans see the current migration as a refugee crisis while the American nationalist view the topic as an immigration issue. The US sees a rise among nationalist ideas as much of the population feel that illegal immigrants place a strain on the citizens of the US (Jasper, 2017). The US focus is on stopping illegal immigration in the US-Mexico border through various means from the military to a large wall (Brandys Laurent & Knox, 2018). The method and approach on how the US public view illegal immigrants have divided the country’s population between those who support immigration and those who oppose it.
Sanctuary Cities
Sanctuary cities continue to grow inside the US splitting state government between federal governments. Most depict sanctuary cites as places along the US-Mexico border, but these cities spread throughout the entire US. Places such as New York City whose demographics are wide and diverse as any nation in Europe gives a great area to study the effects of assimilation inside the US (Lasch, Chan, Eagly, Haynes, Lai, Mccormick, & Stumpf, 2018). Sanctuary cities play both sides of coin when it comes to immigration policies and the problems they have on the local and federal level. Research shows that sanctuary cities place an extra living burden on the citizens of that city and state (Lasch et al., 2018). Citizens around these cities split by those who oppose them and those who support them. The facts prove that the citizens hold the burden as the federal government removes funding from these areas along with federal services such as law and social.
The local citizens suffer these penalties by new imposed state taxes and lack of federal services that they may want. Lasch et al. (2018) explains that citizens often take a back seat to immigrants living in these areas, which causes them to travel outside their local area for services. An example being healthcare or government service centers like Social Security Offices, which become more crowded from citizens of sanctuary cities flooding other communities in search of these services (Brady, 2017). These conflicts lead to citizens blaming the federal government for the issues associated with sanctuary cities making the population focus outward and not inward on the issues causing the divide. The migration issues between the US and Mexico differ than that of Europe as refugees flee the Middle East region from years of conflict.
