Read Reading #31--"Can We Talk? Understanding the 'Other Side' in the Animal Rights Debates"

Yes, we are on animal rights again. But as Weston explains in his introductory note, we are approaching animal rights from quite a different perspective. The selection is from a longer essay by philosopher and, as Weston says, unapologetic animal rights advocate, Roger Gottlieb.

Gottlieb says he identifies the "real concerns" of people who are not animal rights advocates. What are those concerns? What are the strategies Gottlieb uses to convince us that he is taking "the other side" seriously. Does Gottlieb achieve his goal of bringing clashing values into congruence? (You will. have to read the chapter to correctly answer this question.)  Make sure you address what it means to bring values into congruence, and what are three methods for achieving congruence?
