External environment

A business usually operates in an environment where the company does not have a direct influence on the external environment. For instance, in the expansion of Wesfarmers Limited to international markets, it is essential to consider aspects such as political, legal, economic and social factors (Tidström, 2012). Under political aspects, the political stability of a country affects the growth of the company in a specific country. In the expansion of Wesfarmers Limited to international markets, it is important that the business strategy of the company upholds the social and cultural aspects of specific areas. The economy of an area determines the purchasing power of individuals in the area. In the expansion of Wesfarmers Limited, the company should select economically viable zones to enhance sales and profitability of the business enterprise. The legal environment describes the set rules and regulations governing economic activities. In the selection of a potential expansion area, Wesfarmers Limited should select areas with favorable economic restrictions which will provide an ideal environment for the growth of Wesfarmers Limited.

Ethical issues

The success of Wesfarmers Limited can be attributed to the leadership style used in the organization. Over the years, the company has used a result oriented leadership design. The leadership style has been effective in enhancing sales, research and promoting awareness of the company. However, as the modern business world evolves, ethics has become a primary concern in business. Ethics can influence the social perception of a company. Moreover, in violation of ethics, a company may be penalized in a court of law. This significant influence of ethics mandates the evaluation of techniques in the company to ensure they are compliant with ethics. Among the unethical practices witnessed at Wesfarmers Limited is gender inequality. At the company, there is no emphasis on gender equality which has led to a high number of male workers compared to female workers. Also, another potential unethical practice in the organization is the inability to have a diverse workforce. At Wesfarmers Limited, most of the employees in the company are Australians. This occurrence outlines the diversity imbalance in the organization. Moreover, the occurrence may be interpreted as a discriminatory action which may lead to loss of reputation or legal action against the company.

As discussed above, Wesfarmers Limited is a company utilizing the result oriented leadership style. The use of the approach may lead to the company failing to consider the welfare of employees or clients during the performance of duties. This may lead to a legal action against the company suggesting arrogance. This would adversely affect the reputation of the company.

Recommendation

Despite the existence of potential ethical issues at Wesfarmers Limited, there are specific strategies which can be implemented to avert the unethical practices. Among the strategies which can be implemented is the formulation of a code of ethics. The code of ethics will act as a guideline at Wesfarmers Limited consequently averting unethical practices (Cavanagh, 2004). Also, the company should revise its leadership style to integrate a consumer-oriented or employee approach. This strategy will ensure that the welfare of employees and customers is safeguarded during operations at the organization. Wesfarmers Limited should embrace diversity in the recruitment and selection of employees. Diversity averts the company from dealing with any discriminatory allegations. Similarly, diversity ensures the wealth of knowledge in the company which can be used to formulate better strategies which can enhance the growth and development of Wesfarmers Limited.

Conclusion

Business strategy, the structure of the business and business operations are fundamental aspects which determine the success of an organization. The assessment of the business strategy enables to determine if the business strategy contributes to the objectives of the business. Moreover, SWOT analysis outlines the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of an enterprise. This information can be used to enhance the business strategy to realize business objectives. As discussed above, the contemplation of the external environment enables a business to plan for expansion accurately. The evolving of the business environment has made ethics a priority which should be upheld to enable the growth and development of a company.
