RE: Week 4 Discussion

Top of Form

Hello all!

The project I discussed last week was a deck of cards to be designed for my mother’s birthday in October. “Cost, time, and budget estimates are the lifeline for control” (1) and to help keep a handle on this deceptively complex project I’ve broken it down into a phase estimate as described in our text, to help include more details and specifications as we get closer to the end of the game. We have a total of ten weeks to produce this product and have it ready by October 12th. We are setting a deadline for October 1st to allow additional flexibility, and have included some slack to allow cushioning to each phase of the project. Because of the uncertainty to each stage, we are offering a sensitive total slack of one week per stage.

Phase one: the thumbnail, or conceptual stage, will take the longest and has a budget of three weeks. This will include the roughing out ideas for the different aspects of the project – face cards, suit symbols, packaging, back of the deck – as well as allow time for research into printing companies. This phase will be complete by August 13th.

Phase two: Rough drawings based on the decided thumbnails will be completed in this time, as well as a decided color palette for the entire project. This will be completed by September 3rd.

Phase three: The final artwork will be completed and ready to review, with additional time for any final corrections as well as implementing the artwork into the software to send to printers. This will be completed by September 24th.

Phase four: Prints! We will have the prints ordered by September 24th for an additional allowance of time for the order to arrive. Then it’s packaging up, wrapping up, and giving it to mom!
