Nursing A Concept analysis
Concept Analysis Handbook
NR-621 Fall 2023
It's time to begin work on your concept analysis paper. All students are expected to complete a scholarly concept analysis as a final project for this semester. Since this is a major project, its value will be 35% of your final grade.
This is your “Concept Analysis Handbook”. This Handbook provides guidelines and ideas on how to create a scholarly concept analysis. Included is a list of deadline dates that must be met in order to ensure that all requirements are completed on time. Work has been spread out, so you can complete the work at a comfortable pace.
I am looking forward to working with you to make this a valuable learning experience. This experience should offer you the opportunity to learn and understand more about developing your topic of interest and creating a scholarly paper based on your area of interest. The primary goal is to assist in developing your skill in creating a logical, convincing, evidence-based statement about your concept of interest in nursing.
The OWL at Purdue is your primary resource for APA Guidelines ( https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/). You are encouraged to use all of the services available to you through the college including the library and the writing center. You are also encouraged to learn to use the editing and grammar and language tools in the word processing program that you will be using.
CONCEPT ANALYSIS PAPER
Purpose
A concept analysis is an exercise designed to make the student as familiar as possible with a concept. A concept is usually one or two words that convey meaning, understanding or feelings between or among individuals within the same discipline. Some concepts relevant to nursing are health, nursing, managed care, coping and parenting. A concept analysis is the first step in communicating meanings, understanding and feelings.
The underlined words are examples of concepts. Consider the following: mutual help groups for widows and widowers; use of therapeutic touch by Baccalaureate prepared nurses; high school teens understanding of addiction.
Activities and Directions
To begin the process, choose a concept you are interested in, a term you encounter with your work or one you are interested in. Look for the measurable quality in your topic of interest, problem or question.
1. Write down all of the words you can think of which relate to or express your concept.
2. Ask colleagues to share their understanding of your concept.
3. Look up the concept in an unabridged dictionary as well as a medical dictionary and list the definitions you feel most closely describe your feelings or thoughts on the concept.
4. Search the literature for journal articles and books related to the concept to get a sense of the beliefs and thoughts of others in the discipline regarding the concept.
5. Begin the analysis paper with a short introductory paragraph expressing what the concept is and why it is significant to you and to nursing.
6. Develop your own definition of the concept. Your definition may be developed from dictionary definitions and literature support including criteria for measurement of your concept in the real world.
Example: Table (concept)-a four-legged platform used to place objects on.
What else can a ‘table’ be? Is it animate or inanimate?
How do you want to define it?
7. Formulate a list of characteristics or criteria that describe the concept in measurable terms so the concept can be measured in the empirical world. Use your definition, your clinical and theoretical experience, research and literature articles and books to make the list complete.
Example: Concept-Table
Characteristics: a. Four legs of the same length.
b. A flat or platform surface horizontal to the floor.
c. Used to place objects on.
8. Develop the Model Case. The model case is a brief situational description validating the concept including all of the characteristics you have listed which describe or make up the concept. The model case should be able to reflect “if this is not an example of (concept), then nothing is!”
9. Close with a summary.
Concept Analysis (Avant and Walker, 1995)
Analysis clarifies, refines or sharpens concepts, statements, or theories. Dissect the whole for better understanding.
Synthesis combines isolated pieces of information that are theoretically unconnected.
Concept defined—
· symbolic statement describing a phenomenon or class of phenomena (Kim)
· building blocks of theory (Hardy)
· complex mental formulation of experience (Chinn & Kramer)
Avant & Walker created a strategy to examine the attributes or characteristics of a concept:
I. The purpose of concept analysis is to distinguish between the defining attributes of a concept and its irrelevant attributes, refine ambiguous concepts in theory, examine information prior to research and theory building activities, prior to tool/scale development, in development of nursing diagnosis.
II. Concept Analysis Process
1. selection of a concept
2. determine the aim or purpose of analysis
3. identify all the uses of the concept (definitions)
4. determine the defining attributes
5. construct cases
6. identify antecedents and consequences
7. define empirical referents
III. Defining characteristics (critical attributes)
1. cluster of attributes most frequently associated with the concept
2. helps differentiate the concept from others similar or related to it
3. characteristics you see over and over again in the literature
Example: Pregnancy
While there are presumptive and probable signs of pregnancy, the positive or diagnostic signs include:
fetal heart tones
uterine soufflé (sound made by the blood within the arteries of the gravid uterus)
funic or funicular soufflé (sound synchronous with the fetal heart beat, probably from the umbilical cord)
observed fetal movement
observation of fetus
IV. Antecedents
Events or incidents that must occur prior to the occurrence of the concept
Determinants of the concept
Things that precede or cause the concept
Risk factors for the concept
Example: ovulation and sexual intercourse are antecedents to pregnancy
V. Consequences
Events or incidents that occur as a result of the occurrence of the concept
Things that follow the concept
Example: birth is the expected consequence of pregnancy
Suggestions for your paper
· Do not overuse person pronouns such as “I”, “me”, or “we”.
· Double-space the entire paper. Do not double-double space when beginning a new heading.
· Use 1” margins top, bottom, left and right. Do not ‘justify’ your margins.
· Use Times or Times New Roman font, size 12.
· The text of the paper should be 5-7 pages in length excluding the cover page, bibliography and appendices. Text exceeding 7 pages will not be read or included in grading.
· An example of formatting a paper can be found in the OWL at Purdue.
· Work at synthesis of information using your own words.
· Documentation is essential throughout the paper.
· Avoid using quotes; paraphrase.
· Be sure to include all required headings and place the appropriate information under each heading.
· An abstract is not required for this paper.
FINDING INFORMATION FOR YOUR Concept analysis
The concept is the main idea driving your analysis. It must be well articulated to reinforce the direction of the concept analysis. You will need background data that will provide a well documented, compelling argument that presents a convincing case for your concept.
The definition includes: a discussion of how you arrived at your operational definition; your resources, origins of the concept, defining attributes, descriptors, modifiers, common usage.
The theory: Choose a Nursing theory to support the use of your chosen concept. Nursing theory is required unless approved by me.
You must have at least 5 original sources. Only peer-reviewed Nursing articles from peer-reviewed Nursing journals are acceptable. In addition use of 1-2 meta-analysis articles is permitted; not all in ternet resources are a ppropriate references for this concept analysis. Articles should be current; not more that 5 years old unless the article is only one of a kind, is a "classic" (original) resource, or is demonstrated to be pertinent to the concept. All references and resources must be included in the bibliography including organizations, dictionaries, or interviews with experts. Certainly, you can download peer-reviewed journal articles via the library/internet, but treat the bibliographic reference as if you acquired the article directly from the original journal. If you have questions, it is best to ask for assistance. You will need to print copies of the Reference Page for your own use; article information is to be shared but it is not necessary to hand articles in. Reference pages are a tool for you to use. This is part of the preparation work that you will be sharing with your work group.

Consider your expertise, your interests, your experience, and the resources available to you. Then complete the following worksheet by following the steps outlined below:
Step 1. You probably have an idea of what you want to write about (I want to write about television.). As you think about your topic and discuss it with your group, you should begin to have a more specific idea regarding the topic for your paper. Try writing a question that will communicate your idea.
Example: What are the effects of television violence on children?
Try describing your topic in the form of a question:
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Step 2. Take a look at your question. Try to identify the main concepts related to your topic.
Example: What are the 1 effects of 2 television 3violence on 4 children? Write your question again below and circle the main concepts.
